Hi I am Kanna!

I am a single mom of 2 girls that are 20 years old. One is my biological daughter and the other is a good friend of hers that grew up in the foster care system, and considers me the closest she has to a mom. They both make my heart smile and are growing into wonderful self-reliant women. I am one proud mom.

I am dating a man with Cerebral Palsy. He is a licensed minister. The second one is more daunting than the first. We will be getting married when we can afford to live on our own.

I am an IT student and that is where I came to notice some difficulties with school. I was having problems remembering where different unconventional icons were located. I also started noticing that I was having problems paying attention in class. I also was noticed that I was having moments where I would almost pass out. This was happening more often to the point where it was happening while I was driving and that's when I really knew that there was a need for immediate medical intervention.

I was dropped on my head when I was around 2 years old, on a hardwood floor. I also hit the back of my skull on a breakfast bar when I was 18 years old. I am very interested in Post Concussion Syndrome because this appears to be probably what is happening here.

I am under the care of a neurologist. She has already diagnosed me with very high functioning ADD. This means that I am able to still work and the ADD doesn't hold me back much. I have even learned how to use it to my advantage with multitasking. We are still trying to figure out what is wrong and if it is because of my previous concussions.

I have many questions about what I am going through. I am so glad to find this site and hope that I can find answers and support.

Hello Kanna,

Welcome to the NeuroTalk Support Groups. :)

If you've not found them yet, there is an

Attention Deficit Disorder Forum

and

Traumatic Brain Injury & Post Concussion Syndrome Forum

I'm sure if you post on TBI/PCS the members there can offer information and support.
There are excellent "Sticky" threads/posts at the top of the forum too that contain useful websites and other information and that may also be of help to you in figuring it all out.

take care.

Thank you for the warm welcomes! I really appreciate it. I have more than the neurological issues. I also suffer from chronic iron anemia which there is really no known cause. Anemia and hemochromatosis do run in my mother's family but mine seems to be taking the anemia to a level never seen before in my family. My hematologist is scrambling to figure out how to get me on a steady regimen of iron infusions but my condition isn't cooperating. My levels go down at a very unsteady rate. It fluctuates so it is very hard to predict when I will need to have another set of infusions.

The way we found out about this is that my regular iron levels went so low that I should have been dead. It was at 6 and normal is in the 30's. I cannot take normal iron supplements because I cannot keep them down long enough for them to be effective and they are far too weak to do anything....imagine trying to bail a sinking boat with a teaspoon. I have had more iron infusions than I can count in the past 3 years and 4 blood transfusions.

This makes dealing with my neurological problems pale in comparison. While they are annoying and taking away my freedom, at least they won't kill me.

Welcome!

Hi Kanna,

Welcome to NeuroTalk! :D

It appears you have lots going on.

I agree with you, your current neurological challenges must take a back seat to the issues of hematology at this point in time.

I hope your hematologist can help in getting your iron levels more stable, and as soon as possible. :)

Sounds like you have an interesting home/family life, with your two daughters and plans to marry. :)

Often, family and plans for the future can help us to remain motivated and optimistic when encountering numerous challenges all at once. :)

Please make yourself at home here on any forums.

Love and Prayers of Support for you and for your family, :grouphug:

It's a great thing right now that both the iron and the neurological issues are not getting in the way of each other. Though, they do contribute to the anxiety but then so does the boyfriend with Cerebral Palsy (and is a licensed minister), 2 20 year olds out on their own, studying IT for a new career, not being able to drive, and technically being homeless.

:D:D:D:D:D:D I am perfectly sane.....and not sarcastic at all (yeah right!)

Thank you for the great support. This week is going to be a bit nuts because of the schedule changes and the additions of school and homework. My losing one of my workouts is weighing heavily on my mind because they have been keeping me centered this summer and there's a chance that I will lose all of my workouts. I get free water aerobics at LA Fitness because my mom is the instructor. She is wanting to change her schedule....grrr.....I may just have to get a membership. That might be too much on top of Weight Watchers...oh well. It will work out somehow.

Update on situation

The results of the testing is in and I have a list of diagnoses...

Petit Mal Epilepsy
ADD
Autism
Dyslexia
Thinning of my nasal passages on one side

What I don't have is...
Scarring
MS
Tumors
Visible signs of past concussions
Sleep apnea

I come by all of my diagnoses organically. I was born with them. So here's the list of what I had before:

Iron-resistant Iron-deficient disorder
Anxiety
Allergies (1 severe)
Asthma
Sinus problems

I am hoping to make it through all of this and be able to keep my grades up at school, which will be a challenge considering I really am having a hard time concentrating on my schoolwork.
