Help with pain/sensation question

Hi all, in the beginning stages of getting a diagnosis, I'm a 38 year old male, had been Olympic weightlifting for a few years, developed some ulnar nerve entrapment in my arm that eventually resolved. After a couple months off I returned to lifting only to stop again after experiencing what has been a prickling and burning sensation in my neck, my upper back around the shoulder blades, under my armpits, and occasionally onto my chest. It feels a lot like a sunburn that obviously isn't there. Also developed some transient tingling/numbness in my hands. Affer many years at a desk and sleeping with arms overhead, etc, TOS got suggested as a possibility, along with a cervical disk issue. Does this prickling pain and the locations sound familiar to anyone? I'm just trying to get a better idea of what to expect next week at docs/neuros. Thanks in advance.

Hey man. Only 20 here but I have a similar background: weightlifting and desk work. I have similar symptoms. My symptoms are the worst in the mornjng, and I can reproduce the "soreness" just by depressing and retracting my shoulders, which has now become nearly impssible to do. I know how to do it from benching form, but the pinching becomes too intense in that position. How about you? Does the position of your clavicle have any bearing on your symptoms?

Yes, though mine seems to get worse as the day progresses, even from sitting/driving, sometimes, but I can relate, retracting my shoulders or trying to stretch my chest out seems to bring it on.

Nerve pain is burning and prickling. Unfortunately, when it gets to this point, it may call for pt and if unsuccessful with pt then surgery is done. It's not wise to do overhead lifting with any tos symptoms. Try using theraband and rotate arms away from chest to open up the tight interscalene triangle.

You should modify your weight lifting. work on strengthening the lower traps and the rhomboids. Do not do ANYTHING that engages the scalenes - you will find this is almost impossible to do. Look at finding a TOS specialist (sticky threads at top) that can to ULTRASOUND guided botox of the scalene muscles. You may also have luck finding a doctor that specializes in "cervical dystonia" that also does the ultrasound guided botox by looking for someone that specializes in movement disorders. Where do you live? Be prepared to travel....it is worth getting treatment from someone that knows what they are doing early on....I didn't and am now disabled. Good luck!

Hi Trav,

Sorry you're having this pain . I live with it every day. Mine has spread over the last years.
I use my compound cream four times a day.

One thing you can try is a RX for a compound cream with capsaisin, marcaine , and ketamine.

I hope this helps you.
