Newly Diagnosed

My neurologist just stated that I am having petit mal seizures. They are due to an electrical abnormality in my brain. It just is the way that I am.

I am still trying to digest this information. We originally thought that there was an underlying cause for these episodes but have been proven wrong. Any advice? FYI ~ I started a prescription a week ago and I am feeling clearer.

Hi Kanna,

Welcome to the forum! I have had petit mal seizures also called absence seizures for 43 yrs. My advice to you is to cut back on the carbs and starch foods and stay away from NutraSweet or any artificial sweetners. It has been proven that all of these can trigger seizures for many people.

You may want to start seeing an Epileptologist who is a Dr. that specializes in epilepsy. I have found seeing an Epileptologist instead of a neurologist a
lot better because the Dr. can find the cause of the seizures and find the correct prescription for you.

You should also keep a calendar and write down any time you have a seizures write down what time it happened along with a description of the seizure. By doing this your Dr. may be able to see a pattern in the seizures like what time of day/night they happen or what days of the month. Also write down when you start and stop your monthly cycle because hormones changing can often trigger seizures. Years ago I had brain surgery to reduce my seizures and I am very pleased. Check out the Epilepsy foundation e community and you can post questions there also and get help if you are interested. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Thank you for the warm welcome.

I am planning on taking it slow. I have had these episodes my whole life and I just turned 45. I didn't notice them until I was really stressed out enough that I needed to be medicated. My mother states that when I have one my eyes shake back and forth. I can keep on talking but I then lose track of where I was. I am now starting my first medication and it seems to be working. I haven't had a seizure in almost 2 weeks and the only thing getting in the way of my education is the ADD that I also have been blessed with along with highly functioning autism and dyslexia. I haven't even gotten the results of all of this to my PHP. I will be doing that on Tuesday. I know that my triggers are anxiety, allergies and very low iron. I have 2 of the 3 under control enough to not be a problem. I am probably going to need to increase my anti anxiety medication because I am having issues with the stress of school.

Hi Kanna,

You might want to start taking vitamin B12 1000 mcg. once a day this helps calm the nerves down and I know it had decreased my seizures greatly. From what I have studied about epilepsy one of the causes that can sometimes lead to seizures is ADD, ADHD, autism, brain tumors, anxiety, stress and lack of sleep. According to my Dr. both stress and lack of sleep are the two main things that can trigger seizures for a person.
Having your eyes move back and forth or to blink rapidly is all part of some seizures. It happens to me a lot when I have absence sz. also called petit mal seizure.
Here's wishing you only the best and May God Bless You!

Well, that explains it all! I have been also diagnosed with ADD, Anxiety, and Autism. All highly functioning and I am being medicated for the Anxiety. The meds I am on are making me more clear. I now can tell that I am having ADD episodes and then can pull myself back to where I am supposed to be, unless I really don't want to and that's ok too.

My mom is relieved that me falling on my head when I was 2 didn't have any lasting repercussions, nor did my concussion that I managed to do to myself in my teens. I also don't have tumors or MS, so I have a very healthy brain that happens to misfire.

Hi Kanna,

I love your writing about how you say I'm Possible. I get into poetry and short stories. I've been writing since I was a kid.

Just to let you know other than the things I have mentioned these following things can also cause epilepsy: genetics, a bad blow to the head, a bad scare, lack of oxygen, drug and alcohol abuse, and trauma. These are the main things that can cause epilepsy. If you want to find out what is causing your seizures ask your Dr. to do a wada test on you this test can often pinpoint the cause of your seizures but I can't help but wonder if it's all related to ADD as I mentioned before but then I'm no Dr.
Wishing you only the best and May God Bless You!
