B12 & D3 sideeffects

Hello,

I am 30 years male, pure vegan and Non alcoholic.

Everything was ok until I discussed about my leg pain with One of my relative, he asked me to check B12 and D3 levels, found both levels low B12-169(Normal 211-800) , D3 26 (Normal 30 above). I approached local doctor he prescribed B12 shots daily for one week and one shot a week for one month and then one shot a month for an year. and D3 60000 IU once a week for 8 weeks. this happened on Nov 3 2015.

3rd Nov 2015 evening I took B12 injection (Mecobalamin 1000 mcg),
4th Nov 2015 evening I took one more injection and also D3 60000 IU sachet.
5th and 6th I skipped due to office work.. My friend recalls, me explaining I started to feel unreal to him at work on 5th Nov .
7th and 8th evening I took B12 injection, on 9th I strongly felt everything around me is unreal, it was very scary, questioning reality dreading feeling, depersonalization, etc..

Yesterday had my potassium levels tested sawell, they are fine too.

During this period I was also taking Thyronorm 50 mcg and Orlistat.

What might have went wrong ?? how do I get back to normalcy, being in this state is like hell.. After a week now I dont feel unreal but, I am unable to feel how I used to be earlier. Mild confusion. How to get back to original state ??

Do I need treatment or, will it subside naturally ??

Hi Rudy, I cannot answer your question but in my case the b-12 was at 119 and my endo RX one shot per month. I also was RX a pill to take daily. The only symptom I felt was a small boost in strength. You can read the "stickie" on b-12 and it covers most questions. Good Luck, Ken in Texas.P.S. I was not on a vegan diet so don't know what effect that may have on your situation.

Hi Rudy
Welcome to NT.

Did you just start on the Thyronorm 50mg (aka Levothyroxine Sodium) or have you been taking it for a while? If you've just started it can take a bit of trial and error to find precisely the right dose. With Thyroxine just a slightly too high or too low dose can cause side effects.

Thyroxine can also accumulate over time - have you had your thyroid tested regularly since starting it - if you are able to, maybe compare result levels over time. This is something you could discuss with your PCP. If you're taking the Orlistat because of weight gain caused by the Thyronorm this may be an indication that your Thyronorm dose is too high.

In regard to the B12 it would be unusual to react to a high dose injection but not impossible - you may tolerate an oral (or sub-lingual) Methylcobalamin B12 tablet better. Start with 5mg (5000mcg) daily for 3 mths then reduce to 1000mg. Retest after 3 mths (stop the supplement at least 1 week prior to test - can give a false high result). Take on an empty stomach about 1 hour before food. Also the range you quote: 211-800 - I'm guessing this is the US pg/mL - the lower level is considered outdated by many physicians - 400pg/mL is the new low level to aim for.

Here's a link to the B12 sticky:

With the D3 - I take 50,000 units 1x monthly - your body does store it. It may be that your doctor wants to rebuild your stores quickly?

All the best for getting your symptoms sorted. Feel free to ask more questions or just peruse the various forums.

Orlistat can interact poorly with vit D.
Call your doctor because he or she needs to know what is going on.
Check with a pharmacist because they are good about looking for interactions.

You made two big changes of large doses at the same time so it is hard to know what is going on.
Maybe ask your doc to stop the D or the 12 so that you can pay attention to symptoms and side effects for a little while of only one of them.
