Personalised nutrition

This recent paper from Cell (a very high impact-factor journal) may be of interest to members who want to eat in a healthy way; http://www.cell.com/cell/pdf/S0092-8674(15)01481-6.pdf . There is a popular account of it here; http://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/...ectid=11549144 .

It makes the general point that there is a lot of variation between people in terms of how they respond to high GI (fast-release glucose) foods.

In my view this stresses the importance of getting personalised help from a professionally-trained dietitian about eating in a healthy way.

This makes good sense to me.

BUT, ironically, I hired a dietitian to get a little extra support while on prednisone. This med makes me crazy hungry and on top of that, I react freakishly to salt and sugar intake.

She wanted me to eat lots of carbs. When I followed her diet, I gained three pounds per week.

This was ABSURD.

I kept on saying "are you sure you have experience with folks on prednisone?" She said she had worked with people on this drug in the hospital and did fine . Hmmm.... I think they must of been extremely ill and barely eating food.

I had recalled my GP once told me while on prednisone to not eat sugar or flour. To slightly reduce my calorie intake. To reduce starchy carb intake like rice and potato. I got rid of the dietitian, who seem to be following some sort of "rule book," and combined what my GP told me and used my own intuition and did much better.

Just had to get that off my chest, as it was an expensive lesson.

I think that normally it should work out very well....getting help from a professional...almost always wise.

But, always a good idea to trust one's personal experience and instincts as well.
