Gum inflammation after extraction/bone graft
2 Attachment(s)
4 days ago I had a bone graft and extraction on tooth #13 after 2 apicos (in the past year) and 3 root canals (decade), killed the tooth in a trauma nearly 20 years ago. The tooth had developed a pea sized abscess as well as a fistula about 5mm away from abscess.
Some parts seem to be healing well- I thought I was oozing pus near where the abscess had been but that hole has closed. The only thing is some parts of my gums are extremely inflamed, red and painful. Is this normal or possible an infection? Images should be attached... Thanks so much!!! |
Hi Cptawesome,
The healing depends on many factors. One of them is how extensive the damage was to the bone and gum tissue. Due to the long term infection and the repeated apicos, it had to be pretty extensive. In these photos the site does not appear to be healing too well. It is best to see the oral surgeon asap for a clinical evaluation. Please let us know how you're doing. Bryanna,
Thanks so much, I really appreciate your insight and expertise! :) Have a great day! Quote:

Just an update: The oral surgeon put me on abx and wants to take a wait and see approach. He wasn't sure if there was or wasn't an infection. I wasn't originally on abx due to other health issues…
Thanks again for everything! |
Hi Cptawesome,
Okay so he most likely suspects an infection. Did he take an xray by any chance? When does he want to see you again? Other health issues...... it would be wise to supplement with a probiotic to help replenish good bacteria in your intestines while (and after being) on the antibiotic. Are you familiar with probiotics? Bryanna Quote:

Oh, I know probiotics well! I'm on Florastor. Thanks for the tip though!
He wants me back between Christmas and New Years, ideally. No X-ray. Quote:

Cptawesome,
Okay, if Florastor works for you, great. If you do not need to see him before your next appointment, it would behoove you to have an xray done then to evaluate the site for proper healing. FYI... although the gum tissue closes over, the actual bone does not fill in completely for up to one year. Take care, Bryanna Quote:
