Peripheral Neuropathy and Thyroid Health

I know this subject was recently highlighted but I could not find it on search. I was recently told by an endocrinologist that I have Hashimoto's disease and a large thyroid nodule was found on a recent sonogram test. Is it possible Thyroid disease could be a probable cause of my SFN? And if so can it be treated to improve or stop the progression of the SFN?

I read an old post by MrsD that listed all the symptoms of hypothyroid disease and I have them all.

Here are some interesting articles I found as well; http://www.eje-online.org/content/163/2/279.full.pdf
Refer to page 2 last paragraph; https://www.therapath.com/pdfs/newsl...014-Vol-IV.pdf

Thank for listening,
Cliffman

Yes it is possible.

Low thyroid leads to a deposition of a mucoid compound in the skin and along the tendons.
This link shows it in the skin, but it can be deposited deeper...and can cause carpal tunnel.

can cause muscle problems:

Have you purchased your wrist splints yet? They can be really helpful. You can wear them at night to protect the carpal tunnel ligaments in your hands. I still use them today, since my pregnancy 30+ yrs ago.
But I cannot hold sewing needles yet, for more than 10 minutes...so the potential for me is still there.

I have mild hashimotos and a benign thyroid nodule (strawberry size). Have had it since my 20's. Endocrinologist says no to any SFN link. My thyroid numbers are in the normal range. Was kind of hoping they weren't just to have something to give a diagnosis. I also thought my inability to handle cold weather was part of it and the endo poopooed that notion as well.

There is a link between neuropathy and thyroid issues. Can google countless studies on it.

You may want to check. Some doctors are now using less aggressive numbers to treat hypothyroid, mine included.

My initial numbers were in the 5's. Although many doctors do not consider you as hypothyroid until you are in the 10's, mine went ahead and treated me because I had symptoms. It made an incredible difference in my energy levels. She monitored me very closely for the first year to make sure my TSH didn't dip too low. She tries to keep mine under 2.

There are MD's who will give patients theraputic doses of desiccated thyroid. I can call this dosing is what my osteopath did for me back in 2002....no labs at all. I was told my numbers were normal for 10 yrs. I also had Hashi, maybe still do.

10 yrs of depression lifted in 4 days on 30mg of Armour. To start, it may have been 15mg, it was a long while ago 2002. Over the years I'm taking 135mg now.

The OLD time doctors never had labs in their days...so their patients were not numbers, but symptoms and there are over 66 symptoms of hypoT...

My endo was like, "look, if you really wanna try a light dose of levoxy...whatever I can do it. The thing is then we have to worry about bone density and liver damage and i dont see why we would do that whn all of your numbers are normal and they're not even on the edges they are right dead in the middle." She said maybe in year lets revisit it unless you are dead set on it. My take is it is big pharma (zocor and/or Prevacid) that probably did this to me so i am gonna hold off on going on another dependent medication and try supplementation for a bit.
