Public Forum Letter Article Last Updated: 06/30/2007 11:23:27 AM MDT Having a debilitating disease puts a new spin on independence. It is true I am limited in my activities, but since being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, my understanding is much fuller. My perspective on the Fourth of July has evolved. Yes, we celebrate our freedoms and liberties, but do we also realize the blessings of medical care and education? I have visited the ALS Clinic at the University of Utah Medical Center on several occasions. The staff is working to find better treatments for ALS. I have also visited many people who have been recently diagnosed with ALS. They are scared. They wonder what they should do. I get to tell them there are organizations like the Muscular Dystrophy Association that will fight for their freedom. One day we may find a cure, but until then I am grateful for my own personal independence. Alan Alderman South Jordan http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/ci_6270578 |
