Hi all, just now joined. I have a 6 years old with autism. We did a brain MRI on him. Can anybody help me here to interprete it please. If yes where to post the question😊

Is there something of concern to you on the MRI? Have you spoken with the Doctor who organized it?

Thanks a lot Lara, really appreciate it. As per the MRI he has few mild Perivascular spaces. Our doc is out of country now, will be back in few days.

I have 2 with Asperger's Syndrome. Adults now.

My son had MRI when young to rule out something else and before he was diagnosed on Autism Spectrum. He also has enlarged Virchow-Robin Spaces (Perivascular spaces). It's been many many years since I looked into all that but at the time I came to the conclusion that it was not uncommon in Autism. Daughter hasn't ever needed an MRI.

p.s. there are many journal articles about enlarged Virchow-Robin Spaces and Autism if you ever want to read more about that.

Welcome to NeuroTalk :).

I had a chat to my partner about this - she is a psychologist who has worked with children who have developmental delays, including Autism Spectrum Disorder.

She is not competent to comment on MRI scans but her general suggestion was that finding a psychologist who has experience of working with children with ASD could help your son.

There is a LOT of help available these days for young children on the spectrum that was not available when I was a young mum. The person who diagnosed your son as being on the Autism Spectrum is the one to talk to about that.

What type of specialist diagnosed your child? Who ordered the MRI and did they give you a reason for doing that? Because it is a spectrum disorder, every child is different so you need to see someone who is really and truly familiar with Early Childhood Development and the individual needs of your child. There is so much available for young children these days it's incredible.

[I could write a book about what went on here with doctors and misdiagnoses. My son, for example, was misdiagnosed at age 5 with a movement disorder called Sydenham's Chorea. That sent everything off on a very different tangent and it was not at all helpful to say the least. At 10 he received differential diagnoses of a tic disorder and some other things. Finally in his early teens he was correctly diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. The best thing that ever happened was finally getting in to see an incredible Autism Spectrum Disorders specialist who lived not far away from us. That changed everything.

The very best thing you can do for your son is to find knowledgeable professional and educational guidance and these days it's easily accessible. Treatments or therapies need to be tailored to the individual.]

My son was diagnosed at 4 with ASD. He never lost his speech but has a very slow gain, which makes us concern and we went to a neurologist in CA. He ordered MRI.
He don't have any sensory issue, hyper, silly, emotional well connected to us not to his little brother, language delayed, less focused, no meltdowns, academically doing okish (maybe better if focused), has some OCD.
He is 6.5 now, we are very much worried.

I totally understand your worries.
When does his doctor come back from overseas?
How does he get on at school with the other children? I hope you have supportive teachers who keep in contact with you about how he's getting on.
