Can nerve damage in foot cause PN?

I Will try to tell the short version! About 3 months ago I started to have Pain in my foot. à few weeks later I got fasciculations ( twitching muscles) all over my body and face. I Walked with a limb, I also had a small swelling in my foot and pain. My whole leg felt like a belt was around iT. And also pins and needles and burning in my foot. Sudden have vertigo attacks. The neuro did an EMG and That showed Calf muscle weakness. So he send me to the ALS specialist. They tested me gaaien and did an MRI of my lower back. The diagnose is Lumbosacral Plexopathy. But because of the swelling in my foot I Asked my doctor to take x ray of my foot. It showed a fracture of my metatarsal. Now I think this is al caused by a nerve damaged or compressed? Is this possible? Over 2 days I speak to the neuro and I have to tell that my foot is in Plaster now. The diagnose was made because of pain and paralysing after, but now the pain seems to be from a stress fracture! I really like to know if this is possible so I can request for an MRI of my foot.

First of all I want to validate what you are experiencing. I am seeing a lot of similarities with what you describe to what I went through when I first injured my foot. I am only a case study of one, but still...

Second, if you happen to look at my profile please don't get worried that I have CRPS. I ended up with it after three surgeries to address an initial medical mishap.

So here goes....I ruptured my plantar fascia and it went undiagnosed since I am a small woman and don't play basketball. Within 2-4 weeks my foot got more swollen then I started having fasiculations in my left leg that eventually worked their way up my whole left side. I also had a lot of buzzing and tingling sensations. It was like my nervous system was in overdrive. This did eventually settle.

I firmly believe that my symptoms were related to nerve compression by swelling. Nerves are not very tolerant of pressure. It is great that they identified your stress fracture. That would certainly explain your pain. You will have to see if your other symptoms resolve once you are healed. Many, many people have spinal issues and compression and don't have symptoms. Hopefully you will get out of this unscathed.

You might consider taking 500mg of Vit C daily until your fracture heals. It has been shown to reduce the incident of CRPS with fracture and since your nerves are already on edge it is maybe not a bad idea. Also if you are still having too many nervy symptoms for comfort your doctor might be willing to put you on a little gabapentin to keep your nerves more calm as you heal. Hopefully, just identifying the fracture and getting weight off it will allow things to settle. Vit B and D levels are important to nerve health so that could be another thing to check.

Don't forget to elevate! It will help your foot's circulation while you are healing.

Hello Littlepaw, thank you so much for your answer! I am still reading your story, but I regonice a lot. Fine to get some confirmation. Tomorow first I will Some vitamine c. I already have b12 and D because they were to low too. English is not mine language, so I can,t tell you properly how sorry I am for the CRPS you ve got. Tomorrow I speak to my neuro. Now I know For almost 100 % that something is wrong with the nerves in my foot. And that is the cause of al these symptoms. Thanks for your help and wish you all the best! I am glad I was able to give you reassurance. My nerve symptoms did improve greatly once the swelling resolved. Funny, but the doctors didn't think my foot looked very swollen, but it was enough to cause problems.
I no longer have fasciculations or buzzing. I hope this will be the case for you too. My Nerve Conduction study is normal except for a nerve that got damaged in surgery. Nerves take a while to calm down and heal. I wouldn't worry too much if this takes a while after your foot is healed. Just stay in touch with your doctor and let them know if anything gets worse while you are in plaster.

Thanks for your kind words about my CRPS. I am doing pretty well and even with my foot problems I can comfortably walk over a mile every day!

In my readings about nerve damage from many different things, it is written that just an INSULT to the nerves can cause symptoms to start. Your broke toe certainly qualifies. Good Luck, Ken in Texas.

Hello thanks! I spoke with my neurologist and she still does,nt believe iT is from my foot. Last week I have been to the hospital because I felt my cast was to thigt. They changed iT for another one. But because of pain again I removed iT myself. My whole leg is in the evening very red. This morning I went to the weekenddoctor because of that and the worse flaming pain. She tought it was crps:confused:.I dont know if I can attach a photo? Tomorrow I gonna ask for an another neuro. What do you think of the photo? Thanks in forward! :)
