What meds to stop before QSART?
 

I'm taking a QSART test at Cleveland Clinic to test for Small-Fiber Neuropathy. My dr told me to quit my medications 48 hours ahead of time, but I'm not stopping my narcotics for 2 days if I don't have to. Here is a list of my current meds:

amitriptyline
guanfacine
metoprolol
suboxone (I've not heard narcotics need to be stopped, but just checking)
chlorzoxazone
wellbutrin
lyrica

Please advise me which ones need to be stopped in advance, thanks! :)

Hi Johnny - I would ask your doctor for sure. I had a QSART at OSU a few years back but I wasn't on any medications yet. I wouldnt think that narcotics would effect the test because it is looking at sweat production in stimulated spots but I would definitely ask your doctor to ensure the test isn't for nothing!

Narcotics DO, in fact, affect the autonomic system which is what is being tested in the QSART.

You need to call them and tell them each medication and ask them which ones have to be stopped. Some (but not all) narcotics may need to be stopped for this test...all depends on what the doctor wants. You will likely experience withdrawal effects after 2 days off them (or other meds), so discuss this with your doctor.

Most of the time, it is the lab doing a test, that has the
rules you should follow.

Find out where you are having the test, and call them up.

Typically drugs that are anticholingergic should be avoided.
These would reduce sweating.

Some people sweat more with narcotics, and NSAIDs.

Doesn't the dr or the testing facility give, or send an info packet telling a person what needs to be done pre test or pre procedure?

I always assumed that is a standard practice?
Especially if stopping of medications is needed.

The testing place or the Rxing MD should clarify this medication information.

Then call the facility/dept. where the test is being done. You should have been given a number along with an info packet about the test, like Jo*mar stated.

It is not just Rx medications that have to be stopped. Many OTC meds (like Benadryl or other cold/allergy meds) cannot be taken for this test. The facility should give you a complete list and go over what of your Rx meds need to be stopped.
