Dementia like symptoms

Hi

Im only 33 years old but has suffered extensive drug related brain damage resulting in atrophy of the brain. Reallistically Im cognitively impaired and only in my thirties.

Im looking into Aricept, but I wonder about the side effects. What are some common side effects from Aricept? Are there any that are serious?

Which other drugs could help with memory, speech and so?

I dont believe supplements will cure anything, but has there been any proven remedies?

thx

Mottec

Aricept is a prescription-only medication which may have palliative effects in people with Alzheimer's Disease.

The cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease has a somewhat specialised basis so I don't know if this would apply to you - your health care team should be able to advise you about this.

This link provides information about the known side-effects of Aricept; http://www.drugs.com/pro/aricept.html.

I have beem led to believe that all the medications are a temporary fix. I hope they find something really successful soon. My husband is only 62.

Hi blindjohn

Welcome to Neurotalk

There is an Australian clinical trial looking at the effects of a drug called Etanercept on progressive dementia (ANZCTR - Registration).

I don't know about its current status but you could contact Dr Wee (in the link) for information.

Etanercept has been approved by the Therapeutic Drugs Administration for treatment of some auto-immune diseases with an inflammatory component.

I don't know if there are any doctors here who are prepared to prescribe it off-label for treatment of dementia but this is something that you could investigate.
