For a little laugh - What Was I Thinking?

We all need a little laugh from time to time. When we are dealing with chronic pain, a little laugh can do a lot of good, not just to take our minds off of the pain for a few moments, but to lighten our hearts, minds and soul. As I just finished eating another one of my husbands unusual dinner creations, I couldn't help but laugh at some of the crazy things that were, um, not quite right.

I love to cook. Many of my friends have often told me that I should have become a chef. I have never had any classes, but have read numerous cook books throughout my life. I even had to give up a few when we moved, ok, maybe closer to a hundred give or take, and only keeping my favorite dozen or so. I have made every attempt to make all of the meals around our house up until my surgery last January. It did not matter how tired I was or how late I came home from work, I would prep and cook some great, and some not so great, culinary creations. I found great enjoyment in being creative in the kitchen. Now, that usually meant that we would not eat supper until at least 8:30 and occasionally was not until after 11 but it was something I loved to do. The only thing was, my husband complained every night about how late we would eat, although now that he does most of the cooking, we never eat before 10.

Since CRPS has limited what I can do, cooking has all but been out of the picture for me. As my husband brought me a very odd creation of his own tonight, one that I would not want to try again, bean burritos that for some odd reason had bacon and spaghetti in it, sorry hun, I'll pass on seconds tonight, it made me think back to when we were dating. It made me think back to a creation that we put together ourselves. I will admit, we did have a little too much to drink, missed out on going out for dinner and wound up scrounging around his kitchen to make what has been burned in my mind, and on my tongue ever since as the worst meal that I can ever remember being part of making.

So what was it that we managed to make that night. Well, I started making a hot and sour chicken dish of some sort but realized that we did not have any citrus fruits or juice of any kind. It was then that my husband handed me the canned prunes as a substitute. What the heck, canned prunes sounded like a great idea at the time. It must not have been such a great idea, either that, or my husband must have decided it was time to start cleaning out the refrigerator, because when I turned around to stir the pot, I found he had added a can of sauerkraut, teriyaki sauce, basically whatever he could find. Ultimately, I don't really remember what all we added that night, but we were bound and determined to have dinner together, no matter what. We both had one spoon full and that was it. The rest went in the garbage. Normally we don't waste food, but canned prunes and sauerkraut do not go together. I don't know what we were thinking but we did have fun together that night.

So does anybody else have any crazy ideas in your past that were just such failures that they will forever make you just look back, laugh and ask yourself "what was I thinking?"

Purple,

Thank you, that was hilarious, especially because my h has taken over kitchen duty for a year plus and sometimes what he serves makes me feel like I am dining in a frat house. But, I have had my misses, too. The most memorable was the time I used prune puree as a substitute for oil in brownies. They were totally inedible. My h threw them out in the snow and they sat there looking like a pile animal droppings, starving wildlife wouldn't eat them.

Too funny! I am a Pinterest junkie and sometimes that can be a bad thing. I can't tell you how many times my creations have ended up in the garbage.

I attempted a chicken and biscuit dish in the crock pot that went terribly wrong. No matter how long I cooked it all I got was a top layer of gooey dough. So into the garbage it went.

I think I had the biggest problem with desserts. I tried an oatmeal cookie recipe that resulted in cookies that were so hard they were inedible. So my husband and I used them for a food fight!

I have had some great successes but I think the failures are funnier! So I am going to keep "experimenting" and laughing when it goes wrong.

So, I was in college. I was home for the weekend. It was late at night. I keep the lights off, so as not to wake anyone. I just came in the house from a late night out on the town. I had had maybe 1, 2, 3, who knows how many too many cold ones. I pop in a piece of white bread into the toaster. The lady who owned the house made the best ever strawberry Jam. The toast pops up out of the toaster. I reach into the kitchen fridge, grab the jar, load my toast with a nice smooth spread and bite into the hottest homemade salsa I'd ever eaten on a slice of bread in my life.

Husband # 1 and Husband #2....if I have to pick the really brain dead choice, I would have to say #2. Although they each had their positives (Babies 1-5 )

I finally thought of a funny story though it's not really much of a "what was I thinking" story...still can't think of one of those.

Anyway...let's set the scene shall we? Last summer...we had a lot of bees out front by the bay window in our living room. We called in some bee/wasp removal service to take care of them because we didn't want the bees getting in the house (they were wasps actually...but I call the bees)...especially when we saw one or two get in just through the doors. So the service came out, did their thing, and the next day my boyfriend went out of town for the weekend. My baby girl was about 6 or 7 months old at the time.

The next day...there were HUNDREDS bees in the house. No joke...hundreds. Boyfriend gives me the phone # for the service we used and I'm texting the guy back and forth saying you need to get over here and fix this now...especially after my daughter got stung. He didn't come that weekend.

The boyfriend was out of work at the time...had been laid off from his job in march. I only mention this to say he had a lot of time on his hands to do "research" on the internet. So I come home from work a couple days later to this in my living room.

Dryer sheets sticking out of the molding by the ceiling and ceiling fan. Boyfriend standing in the middle of the living room with a bottle of windex in one hand, hose of the vacuum in the other, and a fly swatter sticking out of his back pocket....CRAZY look in his eyes.

Yeah...I turned around, walked out of the room, laughed my butt off...and then called orkin and got the problem taken care of. 6 months later the dryer sheets were finally taken down...lol. I am so happy this man is in my life but that is the most insane and ridiculous things he has ever done...
