Migraines and atypical facial pain

I got atypical facial neuralgia after a peculiar dental procedure approx. 3.5 years ago.
I've always had bad trouble with migraines.

The two seem to play off of each other at times.

Even if the facial neuralgia (sometimes doc calls it atypical TN) is doing a little better on a particular week, if I get a migraine it might act up or vice a versa.

I am often in pain. I guess I'm frustrated. I've had some whoppers lately.

Anyone sometimes see a correlation between the two?

I have several nerve pain conditions and each time one flares, the others often flare with it. I always get responses from my doctors saying that the nerves are angry and they aren't ever surprised when I talk about these episodes. That said, they haven't been able to give me a definite explanation other than cross communication of the nerves.

If it helps any, I know how horrid these episodes are and I'm thankful that they don't always happen this way.

I've been doing a lot of reading on B2 Riboflavin and it's necessity. It helps with energy for one thing but have read many who take it for migraine management. I just ordered a bottle of 100mg Now Foods and will see if I get more of a lift with the other STUFF I take.

Yes I think that is correct.

I suffer migraines and for two years some left sided nerve pain in my face. My face gets worse after migraines.
I am still waiting for a real diagnosis for that.

I think the best explanation I have found for what you are describing is a process called central sensitisation.
I don't know how to explain it fully but it's like the nervous system goes wonky at some point. Any extra inflammation spills over into other pain conditions.

Makes sense since migraines can cause sufferers to develop allodynia after chronic episodes.

Hi Vowel Lady,

It's been a long time. How are you doing?

I get migraines and cluster headaches as well as ATN and when it all flares up around my left eye it is literally hell on earth. I now have Occipital Neuralgia as well so the pain will go around my eye and up over the top of my head to the back causing occipital pain or cervical migraines.

I have talked with a lot of other TNers that suffer from migraines as well and both run in my family. Have you tried Triptans? That medication helps a lot of people with migraines. For me they can last days on end and it doesn't seem there is anything that helps. I get light sensitivity, blurry vision, nausea and vertigo with these flare ups. It is a lot to handle.
