Itchy gums after multiple teeth extraction
 

Monday I had 10 teeth pulled. 6 on top all back teeth and 4 on bottom also all back teeth. Well early this morning I started to get an itchy feelings in my gums on the left side. There is a little bit of pain but nothing really bad. What could be causing my gums to itch so bad??

Tashanicole,

You could be sensitive to the type of stitches that were used. The dentist may have used different suture materials on the left than the right. It could also be a reaction to something that the dentist may have placed inside some of the sockets on the left side, like bone graft material and/or collagen plugs.

What are you rinsing your mouth with?

It would be wise to call the dentist and explain the itchiness before it gets intolerable or spreads.

He didn't give me any stitches at all. I'm rinsing my mouth with warm salt water and I called the dentist office and they said that it's because I had really bad infected gums so it is normal for my gums to itch.

Also would like to add that he didn't put anything inside the sockets that I know of. He didn't mention it anyway. I've read that it's part of the healing process but I don't understand why only one side is itching. Also just about an hour ago keep getting pains behind my ear every so often.

You had 10 teeth pulled and he didn't suture any of the extraction sites? sometimes when there is severe infection, the sites are not sutured so the infection can drain easier. That has both pros and cons. Did you see an oral surgeon or was he just a general dentist?

Itching is the result of histamines being released in response to the surgery. However, it can also be from the draining infection. Are you on antibiotics?

The pain behind your ear can be muscular related and inflammation as your jaw was manipulated during the removal of the teeth. If that becomes more intense or spreads to other areas, see the dentist for evaluation.

What type of food are you eating? You should be eating a soft food nutritious diet, nothing that requires a lot of chewing as your jaw needs a rest. Also avoid seeds, rice, spicy foods, hot temperature foods, sugar, breads, crackers... anything that can easily get lodged or stuck in the sockets.

The dentist was just a general dentist and yes I'm on antibiotics. Taking one every 8 hrs. Also I'm eating puddings and applesauce as they told me to. The itching isn't constant it comes and goes but sometimes last for awhile.

Hi there sorry for jumping on the thread, hoping i can use skme of the advice..

I myself had all teeth removed little over a week ago (30th Jan). I have since visited my dentist who has said i can use my dentures (although i havent cos my gums where still pretty sore). Today they have been real itchy (particularly at the fromt) but no pain. Im assuming its part the healing process but not entirely sure.
