Azithromycin

I'm on day 3 of azithromycin (z-pack) for respiratory infection and ear infection. I'm feeling so out of energy. I thought I just wasn't getting better, but now I'm pretty sure it's the antibiotic that's making me weak. I guess I only have 2 more days of it so I might as well stick it out. Can I just take some extra mestinon to get through it?

Azithromycin has a moderate risk of exacerbating symptoms of myasthenia gravis Azithromycin Disease Interactions - Drugs.com.

It might be worth discussing this with your prescribing doctor.

I was having the same problem. Called and they had me stop it.
Be careful

Well, you won't be sticking it out for 2 more days. It will be in your system 5 days after you finish the last dose! Deceptive little drug.

You need to contact your neuro and prescribing doctor to get their advice. Some people with MG can go into a crisis from some antibiotics.

Azithromycin/Zithromycin/Z Pack is relatively contraindicated in MG, but there are those who can tolerate it. Since you are becoming weaker, only you and your docs can decide if the risk is worth it or not.

Do you have seasonal allergies? Any other allergies? Just wondering if you have been assessed for allergies, since they are what can lead to sinus infections.

I hope you are taking acidophilus while on the antibiotic! If so, keep taking it for a couple of weeks. Antibiotics not only get rid of bad bacteria, they tend to get rid of some good ones as well. And if you are at all immunosuppressed, that makes the situation worse and could leave you open to being a C. diff risk, a secondary infection.

I hope you'll feel better!

Yeah. The extra mestinon is not really doing the trick. I'm traveling and was unable to lift my suitcase onto the bag check scale. Of course they don't help you (I can never lift it up on the plane overhead compartments). I'm using my cane. I am imunosuppressed and should get some probiotics. I'm already going to the bathroom 10 times a day but I think it's just a side effect of the azithromycin. Never again
