Guillain-Barré syndrome trending on Facebook

I wondered why this was the case, so I clicked and discovered unsurprisingly it's due to the association with Zika:

if the zika virus can cause the severe form of Guillain-Barre that leads to paralysis, im sure it can cause the lesser forms and neurological symptoms as well. For someone who has peripheral neuropathy already and contracts Zika the effects could be devastating.

I live in a place where there are local Zika outbreaks

and it is a worry. Zika-positive mosquitoes were recently found in 3 traps located in an area where the virus is spreading and state officials refuse to identify 2 of those trap locations. The state has been slow to let us know where new outbreaks are I think because of the effect it will have on tourism.:(

If any good comes out of this at all it will be more attention given to Guillain-Barre. None of my friends had ever heard of it before Zika.

Viral illnesses can result also in GB syndrome too.

It is also listed on vaccine side effects, and if you listen to the TV ads for the various vaccines, it will be mentioned too.

A neighbor of mine just finished Chemo and shortly thereafter, in the spring had a short viral upper respiratory infection, and within a week a full blown GB started. And within 2 days she was in the hospital, and stayed there almost a month. They put her on plasmapheresis for several days. This was new back then 30 yrs ago, but she recovered quickly. Being a hospital employee it was free (they paid for whatever the insurance rejected back then).
But in her PT recovery therapy, she met some who were paralyzed for a year or more with a poor prognosis. She was only in her mid-forties then.

GB seems to be an autoimmune reaction to viral infections and vaccines and so far is difficult to predict who will manifest it.

The father of a dear friend where I live got GB from the flu vaccine.
