Newly diagnosed--small fiber neuropathy and fibromyalgia.

Just got diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy (SFN) and fibromyalgia. I am 40 and male.

The SFN biopsy showed 1.1 nerve fiber density in my foot, low normal is considered 3-4.8. Also have a burning sensation in my feet a lot of the time which is consistent with SFN.

Not sure about the fibro diagnosis. I have no tender points, though I do have aching all over my body, fatigue, unrestful sleep, depression, anxiety. A neurologist gave me the diagnosis, though I will be seeking a second opinion.

My symptoms of fibromyalgia are directly related to my quality and length of sleep. I have been diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and UARS. One sleep doc (ENT) says my symptoms could be caused by the sleep apnea, another ENT says probably not, and that my numbers are too mild. The SFN is

It is all very confusing. I am I have had a lot of blood tests to rule out everything else. The only tests that were positive were SFN and sleep apnea. I don't think the sleep apnea is causing the small fiber neuropathy and I am trying to figure out what is, or what has.

That is all for now...

Hi there DaveSP :)

Very sorry to hear of your dx of SFN.

I was dx'd via biopsy in Sept 2013 after 6 rounds of chemo (ending March 2013) and also being pre-diabetic. A month after chemo ended I was unable to walk without severe pain in my entire foot/feet. Even though I know what caused mine it really doesn't help

My foot dr only took two skin samples from above my right ankle. My results were 0.0 and 0.06 so the dx was severe SFN.

I have all your symptoms plus some (my apnea was described by my dr as severely moderate....weird I thought). Yea for me right ? :D

My blood tests also came back normal. Only the biopsy was positive.

I agree your sleep apnea is not causing your SFN dx.

I am under the care of pain mgmt. and take 1800 mg a day of gabapentin and ER Morphine 30 mg 2 times a day.

Glad you are here and please keep posting and let us know how it's going for you.

Thanks for your comment Debbie. It is helpful to communicate with others out there in a similar situation like yourself. I wish you the best.
