How long will Prednisone start to effect for MG?

Hello, I'm a middle aged woman of 50 years. I have been diagnosed with MG this May 2016. I have had a thymectomy and my neuro have prescribed me prednisone now. I am starting with 10mg a day and will build up to 20 mg a day. With it I am taking Imuran 50 mg and mestinon 360mg every 6 hours, 4 times a day. What I wanted to ask that how long will I be able to see the effects of my medications? and my mg fading? I want to start my job as soon as possible, have a family that depends on me. Please do take time to answer.

alianazle,
You have a difficult question to help with, without more information. What were your original symptoms, and what are they now. I also take Imuran and Prednisone, as well as Mestinon. I take levels that are slightly higher than yours. However, when I first was diagnosed, I took only 60mg Mestinon 4 times a day. After 2 crisis spells 10 months ago, mine were sharply increased. I seem to be much better now. My Nuero said the Imuran takes 6-8 months to be really effective, and the Prednisone builds up slowly also. Can you work now? If not it may take a while. I don't know if to say your MG will fade is correct. The meds can control it, but not cure it. You could be better than you are now, however, I don't know how you are now.
Hope this helps. Welcome to this forum. We will help if we can.

alianazli, Welcome to the forum.

It's hard to predict when the Imuran will kick in. Prednisone can make a person with MG temporarily worse before they are better. But it does "kick in" after a fairly short time. But it also can come with a lot of side effects. There's such as an immune system being suppressed too much.

Did your docs say to take flax or fish oil to help with the gel coating of your stomach, which Pred has a tendency to reduce? Did they say to take calcium and vitamin D3 daily?

I hope you will be able to work. Many people with MG can. The hardest part is to be patient, take care of yourself, and see what happens on the meds.

If you become worse, please call your neuro. If you are really bad and can't swallow, move, or breathe well, please go to the ER/hospital.

What are your symptoms now? Are you doing better on the treatments?

Take it easy!!!

Annie
