Hit head again what to do
I just ran into a beam and have a large goose egg. Concussion #6 undoubtedly. What do I need to do? What are the supplements that should be taken immediately after?

I don't think supplements are designed to be a quick remedy but the normal regimen should be fine. An anti-inflammatory that does not thin blood should be OK. Tylenol/acetaminophen/paracetamol is suggested. Ice the injury site. 15 minutes on, 15 to 30 off. There is no consensus about fish oil in high amounts because it is a blood thinner. Some say take 4 or 5 capsules a day for the first week or two (Dr Lewis is not specific). Others are concerned about thinning blood in case of a bleed.
If you are already taking a good regimen, you should be about as good as you can. Some B-12 and a B-50 Complex should be good.(not B Complex or Super B Complex) I wonder if this was a concussion or rather a head bump that just caused a goose egg. What immediate concussion symptoms did you experience ? |

A minute of struggling to be aware of what happened is usually concussion related confusion. But, being startled by the impact and needing to stop to realize what you just did is not necessarily a concussion. A sub-concussive impact likely but it takes hundreds of those to be a problem. No strange tastes, vision disturbances, etc ? |

Mark, to update: My left eye has been acting a little stranger than normal, and my vision has been doing some odd things like flickering in low light. My balance has been a little off, and I have been doing everything for BPPV just in case. I woke up with bad nausea the last couple days as well.
I have been really conservative, and all my professors know that I will be gone for a week as I'm doing cognitive rest. I am trying to do cognitive rest, but it seems all but impossible. Last night my girlfriend called me very distraught, and her stress quickly became my stress and I could not keep it together. It felt like my head was going to burst with the adrenaline from the overwhelming news from her, but I just couldn't help it. I just cannot get over how I hit my head exactly 1 year after my bad head injury. Life is getting pretty heavy right now and I really don't want to have to drop out of school again. |

A common issue that arises when there is a head bump is people looking for concussion symptoms. That anxiety can cause a myriad of symptoms. If we feed the anxiety about a head bump, it is likely we will have symptoms. Nobody can say exactly if CE's head bump was a concussion or just a subconcussive impact. If we go on with life, not looking for symptoms, our symptoms will be minimized. But, if we feed the anxiety by focusing on every little symptom, the symptoms can get out of control. Mix in the anxiety and stress of a girl friend in distress or other emotional stress and the line between concussion symptoms and relationship stress symptoms blurs. If we get a headache after a head bump, that does not mean we suffered a concussion and should be "looking" for other symptoms to manifest. We need to get on with our lives while reducing stress and anxiety as our primary goal. |

I jumped out of a truck once at work to do something and briskly walked into one of my work plane wings just above my forehead. I ended up falling backwards onto my head on the concrete pad I was on. This was before I knew about concussions. I got up wondered what just happened and went about my business and spent my time worried about how dumb employees thought I might actually be. If that happened today I would probably spend a few days combating worry about a concussion sending me over the deep end. I would think you are ok and should work on reminding yourself of just that. Bud I had a similar incident at work with the tailgate of a dump truck. I didn't think anything of it because I wasn't knocked out, but my bad anxiety and insomnia that I had the rest of the summer really made sense knowing what I do know now. To update, my vision was definitely affected, and my eyes still have that feeling that I just can't describe when I talk or read. My neck has been tensing up a lot as well when I try to read as well, but my dizziness and off balance feeling seem to have gone away. I have a good amount of noise sensitivity too. I really want to avoid the delayed onset of symptoms that I had last time, so I am going to try a very slow return to school, draw incompletes for the semester, and just finish my classes over winter recess. |
