On Wheelchair Repairs

Massachusetts Disability Law Center held a conference at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge, MA on November 21, 2016:

Highlights:

Be sure to have your wheelchair serial, model number and software controller version numbers on you at all times. Frequently the wrong spare parts are sent.

There are twenty-eight standards for wheelchairs involving stability, maneuverability and durability. While wheelchair complexity has increased, wheelchair reliability has decreased. Wheelchairs are subject to hundreds of thousands of curb drop tests and expected to last about three to five years.

Wheelchair citizens should have a backup wheelchair and maybe two backup wheelchairs.

Unemployment among the disabled is 77%

While waiting for repairs 55% can not leave home and 31% can not reach work.

Broken caster wheels are common malfunction. Wheelchair hold downs should NOT be considered an option.

Medical Doctor's signature on paperwork is invaluable.
