More pain in arms

Hi everyone, it's been a long time since I've been on. I have a lot going on in my family. My husband is sick.

Since I haven't been around I'll quickly update. I have full body small fiber neuropathy. I receive IVIG Rxs two days every month. I also take amytriptylin, tramadol and low dose kolonopin at bedtime. I also take many supplements.

I know it's winter and sfn always gets worse in the cold weather. However , my neuropathy seems to be getting so much worse. I have always felt it in my arms but they are getting so much worse. They are as bad as my legs now. I wish I could put my body in the corner for awhile and take a break.

Recently my doctor advised starting Mg. I know a lot of people on here take it but I'm wondering if anyone has experienced an increased level of pain when taking it. I doubt very much this is it but just thought I'd ask.

Since I haven't been on in a while I'm wondering if there is anything new out there for people like us with sfn.

I appreciate any help you can give me
Hopeful

Hi Hopeful,

I am so sorry to hear about your husband being ill. I would imagine that alone would increase the pain of SFN.

I have SFN all over my body too and I am sorry to sound ignorant of the abbreviation but what is Mg. please? Thank you.

All the best wishes......
Cliffman :)

Sorry I meant magnesium. I'm sorry you are going through this too.

Ah Magnesium, I was thrown off because It's not typical for a Physician to recommend a supplement, at least not in my experience. I have taken it and no increase in pain. The only issue I am aware of is If you take Gabapentin it has been written that it can decrease the efficacy if taken at the same time of the day. However, I did not see that in your list of medicine taken.

Magnesium is a NMDA pain receptor blocking agent. It can be helpful for improving circulation, and blocking some pain signals.

You will want to start at 200mg elemental a day, or 2 tablets a day of SlowMag (or the generic Mag64 which is better absorbed.)
Take the SlowMag one tablet twice a day. This is designed for good absorption, and less laxative side effects.

Avoid magnesium oxide, as it is not absorbed, and just passes out with the stool.

You can also use magnesium citrate, malate, taurate but all magnesium in large doses can be laxative orally. This varies from person to person.

There should not be any increased level in pain. In fact using a topical version is better than oral. That is what I do now. Unfortunately, the lotion that is so nice, was recently discontinued by Morton's, because of slow sales. There are other creams and lotions on Amazon ... so take a look there.

No I don't take gabapentin. My doctor that prescribes supplements is actually a holistic GYN. Thanks

Thanks Mrs D, I'm taking magnesium citramate 135 mgs. The doctor recommended I increase one capsule a day until I develop a loose stool then go back one capsule and stay there. I'm up to four and that has not happpened.
It is Thorne brand. It's for vegetarians. What do you think?
