Liquid R-ALA
Does anyone know if the liquid form of R-ALA is available? I read it is more effective than the solid form. Here's a link to the article. Thanks (R)-α-lipoic acid oral liquid formulation: pharmacokinetic parameters and therapeutic efficacy. - PubMed - NCBI

Anything that improves solubility is a good thing.

That's it Marlene! Thank you. Now from what I have read there is no downside to taking R-Lipoic Acid because it it produced naturally in the body. Is anybody aware of any negatives to taking this?

Yes,, very high doses can affect the heart. I am using
A tablet so doing links is too difficult for me. You can find on google Lipoic acid side effect on the heart |
I would start at a low dose and see how you do. The link below has some of the side effects. One is about how it can lower blood sugar levels, which, if you have sugar issues, you need to be aware of this. The other, which was new to me was about Vitamin B1. They suggest taking a B-complex if you are going to use ALA.
It is heavy metal chelator and most of us have some level of heavy metals in our bodies. If you take a large dose right off the bat, you stand the chance of mobilizing too many of the heavy metals for your body to handle. So again, start at a lower dose and see how you do on it for a week before increasing it. R Alpha Lipoic Acid |
Thank you Mrs D and Marlene. Based on your feedback I am going to educate myself further before trying. Thanks.

I hope I haven't discouraged you from trying this. ALA really helped my husband's PN. He had no adverse side effects. He took 600mg/day of ALA divided in three doses. He now uses R-ALA...about 100 Mg/day. Two of his supplements contain R-ALA which adds up to about 100 mg.
But it is good to do your research before adding a supplement and start low and go slow. And since the liquid form is supposed to be more effective, you may need as much. Everyone is different and finding what works for you is important. Good luck and let us know what you do. |
