That is a very interesting paper.

It supports studies which show that some metal ions, including Mn(II), can interact with α-synuclein leading, in model systems, to increased neurotoxicity Insights on the interaction of alpha-synuclein and metals in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease - Metallomics (RSC Publishing) DOI:1.139/C4MT339J.

The paper by Racette et al. [1] shows the effect of manganese, as measured by UPDRS score, in a population of welders. The interesting point is that the workers were not (as yet) diagnosed with parkinsonism. Multiple follow-ups show a slow progression over many years but not, for most at least, being severe enough to get medical attention.
