red glossy eyes, could it be from TIC?

Hi, my daughter recently had an outbreak of her tics. Since she came down with strep/sickness a couple of weeks ago. I have been noticing that her eyes in the evening time are very red, and glossy like watery but not teary, could this be from her eye ticking all day?

Hi,

I don't know much about ticks. I've had them, and they worried me, but when I went to my neurologist he said "everyone has them. Even I have them."

So he didn't think it was important.

I do want to tell you though, that I had really red eyes for years. One way more than the other... They actually looked sort of painful, and people used to mention them when I used to go out. (I've been housebound now for a couple years.)

Okay... so the other day I happened to notice that they are not so red any more... and I took a photo to compare to an earlier photo I had...

(After I posted this on another forum no one talked to me for a bit... I think I look a whole lot worse in "person" than in people's minds when they read what I write. And besides I don't have on any makeup in these pics. So... be forewarned.)

(Oh... I should mention that I don't have Tourette's. I think my eyes were red from low vitamin B12...)

Hi hermom.
Yes. It's highly possible that her eyes are very irritated from all the eye blinking or other eye movements if that's what she's doing. Hard to say. I take it that her eyes don't look infected or that she's not had this problem before. She might find it comforting to lie down with a nice wet and cool or warm (depending on what feels better to her) facewasher or facecloth over her eyes.

I have heard of people using a product called artificial tears or something similar. I think it's mainly normal saline but it puts moisture back onto the surface of the eye so that every time they tic then it's not as irritating. Even though her eyes might appear watery, it's possible that they're dry. I know that from wearing contact lenses. They'll water when they're irritated and dry and putting the drops in will help.

My son had a lot of different eye tics over the years and the blinking made it really hard to focus and to read but they did settle down in time. If she's got lots of eye blinking tics and she's having trouble concentrating on reading it's helpful to use a card or a ruler to follow the lines. Then when all the blinking is going on, it's not as difficult to find ones place again. My son had one eye in particular that really bothered him for ages and he wanted to keep something over his eye to give it a rest. Sometimes at home he would wear a little soft eye patch firmly placed over his eye to keep it rested for a while. It was just that feeling of pressure that seemed to relieve the irritation.

If you're concerned you should ask your doctor to check that she doesn't have an eye infection. It is probably the increase in her eye tics, but it's working checking especially as she's not been well recently.

hi hermom

yes, I agree that the first thing to check is an eye infection

a number of things could be causing the eye redness etc

if she is having eye tics, and/or possibly eye rubbing tics (my son had that once) then that could be the cause

also, she may be reacting to airborne allergens (dustmite, animal dander, pollens etc) I get red eyes from dustmite and dryer lint

and
as it is summer..........if she is doing a lot of swimming, the chlorine may be the culprit

if it continues tho I would definitely have it checked by a pro

The other two posts were so helpful, and had so much more knowledge than me that I'm a little reluctant to add this...

only it might be useful to know.

That is that when I was first taking so much extra B12 (my doctor had given me a prescription for a B12 shot a day... which was way more than had ever been prescribed previously) I discovered that I had a quite large brown spot in my field of vision... I forget which eye.

On a forum I was told many things, but one person said it could be from all the cyano I was getting because of all the shots of cyanocobalamin...

That really worried me because I didn't want to stop having the shots because they were helping SO much with my peripheral neuropathy pain, and with my memory.

so I lived with the brown spot...

Then a woman who came to my site and who had also being living in hydrogen sulfide prior to getting tetanus wrote me and said that she'd done a liver cleanse and it had helped her a lot.

So I came here to this forum site, I think... and asked about liver cleanses... and was told about Milk Thistle. Or else it was another similar forum... I forget.

But I got the milk thistle and for the first few days of taking it I felt horrible. They say that when it frees things from your liver then you get the reaction the things gave you initially.

Well, I kept on taking it and after a while I began to notice that the brown spot was hardly there any more.

So, I was wondering last night before I fell asleep if the Milk Thistle could in some way be helping to remove the red in my eyes... (via my liver????)

I have no idea.

I was thinking that the redness in my eyes was for sure pretty bad while I was living in the hydrogen sulfide... so maybe the milk thistle is somehow clearing out some of those toxins from my system... and it's helping my eyes.

I just wanted to mention this, because I don't know which of the things I'm taking might have helped.

I hope this isn't an irritating post.

Hi Karen :)

yes, Milk Thistle is recognized as being a remarkable liver cleanser and general detoxifier...the active ingredient, silymarin, is receiving research attention too

In this case tho, I am thinking this may be far more related to either eye tics or some allergen.

Chemar 07-24-2007 12:39 PM

hermom

just another thought.......are the strep antibody levels still high? I am assuming the infection itself is cleared up? No more fevers etc?
This may well be related to the strep infection too

have you mentioned the eyes to your doc who treated for strep?

hermom33 07-26-2007 09:21 PM

Thanks

Hi, Thanks for the replies. I did take her to her DOC and he didn't seem to think it was from her tic (she rolls her eyes up and blinks a little) he gave me a scrip for eye allergies. I know she doesn't have them though. We both told him that they dont itch or burn. It just started once her TIC got bad again (after being really sick, ugh), come night time they are really red. The allergy drops I used it 2 times and both times she cryed (she is 10) because it stung SOOOO bad. I am not going to give them to her anymore.....It will make her tic worst too because it is making her eyes sting. :((((

a very soothing thing for eyes is the old sliced cucumber remedy....just wash and make two round cucumber slices and then let her rest with those covering each eye

I really do think this may have something to do with the illness, which in turn is likely what triggered the intense tics....JMHO

what meds was she given for the strep? might even be from a side effect. one of the 1%.

she might just need a lubricating drop. these are not irritating and very soothing.

i know when my kids are sick, as much as i try to keep them washing their hands and keep them off their faces...well it happens.

she might have rubbed her eyes. one of the best products to use to keep the eye area clean...good ole baby bath wash. like johnson and johnson. won't irritate and won't remove all the natural oils she needs around her eyes.

even if her eyes seem shiney, they can still feel dry to her.

can ya tell i have a bunch of kids?

 i hope she is feeling better today.
