Hearing Loss
 

Hi Everyone,

I am an adult who was diagnosed with hydrocephalus last year and had VP shunt surgery last November. My neurosurgeon made one adjustment since surgery and when I came home I noticed I couldn't hear the TV at the level I was used to. I heard a constant swooshing sound and thought it was the heater blower .until my husband said the heater wasn't even on. Was wondering if any of you experienced hearing loss either after surgery or after an adjustment.

In short, yes. My hearing was affected greatly after having the shunt inserted. I too had an awful 'wooshing' sound especially when walking. I informed my surgeons of this but they discredited my symptoms and suggested it was psychosomatic in origin. But not 3 months after the surgery I was back having further surgery, a craniotomy, to reduce the size of the growth which caused the hydro. To say I have a less than great opinion of the medical fraternity would be an understatement. They have minimised my concerns repeatedly until it has become an emergency situation, which I have found very disappointing. My recommendation is that you maintain your concern and get a 2nd opinion because although the medicos make out they know it all, only you, the patient truly know when some thing is not right. If you allow them disregard your concerns, you will not be doing yourself any favours.

I subscribe to a hydrocephalus listserv and have heard people mention that they can hear the draining occurring. If that's what you hear, it can't be fixed.
