In Memoriam for Sheila L Talley

Sheila and I met on BrainTalk in the spring of 2000 (the site before NeuroTalk). I've never had such an instant friendship. She was like a sister to me; the best friend I've ever known that I never met.

Sheila had MG. Her situation was complicated by a number of other conditions, such as Pred-induced diabetes, APS, skin cancer, and many other issues. Some of you may know her, and her struggles. But everyone knew her as someone who never gave up. We kidded that we were probably both doctors together in a former life and were forced into multiple medical problems in this life to be better ones in the future.

She was a fierce, loving woman who adored animals, particularly dogs (schnauzers, to be specific). Her work with dog rescue is well-known and she also boarded dogs for others. She also had a love of crocheting and created a book about the topic. She was an avid gardener, someone very knowledgeable in herbs and healing remedies such as comfrey (she grew her own). Sheila had many interests and was never bored with life. Fishing with her son was one of her favorite pastimes.

Her daughter had just given birth to her first grandchild (a boy) shortly before Sheila died on March 14, 2017. I'm grateful she was able to hold him and know him, if only for days.

I believe it is fitting to put this here, since she was such an inspiration for many who have MG. Her struggles to keep having IVIG alone would make for a book. Her sister also has MG, something that always seems to take doctors by surprise. We had many conversations about Prednisone alone, and how it can ruin a life. Sure, the drug can help, but what it created in Sheila's life was hard to watch.

Words cannot express how much I, and all who knew Sheila, will miss her. Her sister, husband, son, daughter, and the rest of her family and friends will miss her the most. A day won't go by when I won't think about her. I'm grateful for every single conversation and email we shared. I love you, She.

She would have a great laugh about the fact that this post pushed me into the Grand Magnate category here. Talk about synchronicity.

I wish the newbies here could have known Sheila. Many of the vets who knew her aren't here anymore. What a wonderful woman she was. Thanks for the wishes.
