vitamins

I have had issues with mild depression. I've mentioned it here and there on NeuroTalk. I've had freakishly good luck with vitamin therapy...D3 and the B's. I recognize that this is a very fortunate thing.
Our close relative has Bipolar Disorder. She is adopted...not blood related.
I have thought of giving her low doses of Vitamin D and a B Complex (surely they are out there someone) and suggesting she try them if she finds herself depressed to see if it helps her.
Maybe just take it for 3-5 days. I just don't know.
Has anyone experimented with something like this?
Is it likely to cause a manic episode?
Is it a relatively safe thing to do?
Does anyone take these vitamins regularly? Did it cause any issues at all for you?
Thank you.

have her check her vit d levels, I was low so I take 5,000 units every day to bring my levels up to 50-60 the recommended level.
nothing wrong with the b vitamins. I take a multi vitamin.I take lots of supplements too, have never been stimulated from them.
good luck

Vitamin B's can be energizing for some people.

And they should be taken in the morning instead of at night when
they could interfere with sleep.

B vitamins are water soluble so you can take them without much worry... the excess is passed out through the urine. Vitamin D is a different story. As Bizi mentioned, levels need to be monitored.

Hi!

Sorry I'm just a newbie and I came across the posts - could i ask what is the relevance of Vitamin D with depression?

Your answer is highly appreciated. Thank you. :winky:

Because he needed something, and getting to a psychiatrist for meds was/is going to be at least another month or two.

I bought St. John Wart and SAMe for him. He takes the St John Wart as directed
but we found that he didn't need as much SAMe as recommended.

Its helped his depression and other issues a lot.

This is my son Dan. He is bi-polar and other issues. And stops taking meds,
And then doesn't do what he needs for his insurance all the time.
So we are seeing how this works for him.

But I'm interested in the B's and then D's because of his lead levels from
his job. That he now gets Disability insurance from.
I am not sure that part makes sense. But he worked in a battery factory
and his lead would skyrocket.

I hope that D is doing well.

For some people, taking too high of Dose of SAMe can cause mania symptoms.
I guess he knows that right dose for himself.

I started taking vitamin D because I have MS. There is a theory that vitamin D has a positive effect on the immune system and that maintaining adequate levels could reduce the frequency and/or severity of relapses.

How much vit d are you taking kay?
(((HUGS)))
bizi I take 5,000 units a day which brings my level up to 50-60 which is the recommended level.

I take 5,000iu of D3 a day too now but was on am maintaining a pretty hefty loading dose because last time I had my level drawn it was low. Most neurologists want it in the 80-100 range for MS patients, some even higher up to 125. I need to have it drawn again. I forgot to ask my PCP the last time I saw him.

bizi 04-28-2017 09:55 AM

wow! I saw that they come in 10,000 unit little capsules. That should bring you up to those numbers easily.

That is a lot. I would have to be monitored more closely/more often before I'd consider taking those. I did take 10,000iu for a month after my last blood draw as a loading dose tho.

Someone asked what the sigfnicifcance with Vitamin D3 and depression is and I can't acurately answer this. However, I can tell you that I, for some reason, need to take kind of a lot of it for it to work.

I take 5000 iu in the morning and 2500 iu at night every night. Plus there is some in my multi vitamin.

If I'm experiencing any depression at all (even mild), I take 5000 in the morning AND at night for awhile and then switch back to the 2500 at night.

The B's also help me a lot.

I was tested and my D level was high normal...can't recall the exact number.

I'll see if I can get our relative to take a vitamin D test. But, I don't know if her doctors or if she will be cooperative.

I was thinking of just getting her a lowish dose , maybe 1000 iu and seeing if she would be willing to take this daily to see what happens.

To be honest, some of doctors don't see the importance of taking so much vitamin D. I would rather not be depressed...so high normal is absolutely fine with me.

See a professional for the right dosage

Vitamin D and B complex are both good supplements for anxiety and depression. But for the right amount or dosage, I suggest you should be seeing a professional. Because misusing a medicine might cause other health complications.

Vitamins

I take Vitamin E 400 IU every day. At least twice a day.

bizi 05-27-2017 06:00 PM

I take 5,000 units of vit D3 because I am deficient.
bizi

OhKay 05-28-2017 07:56 AM

I have B12 and D deficiencies diagnosed by my doctor, so I've been supplementing them for years. I just need a follow up level on my vit. D level.
