missing carotid artery

Anyone out there have any experience with having only one carotid artery that lead to a stroke? Just trying to learn all I can about this as my husband just recently found out he was born without his right carotid artery.

Is there collaterals that make up for the missing artery?
He had no symptoms or odd effects because of this as a child/young adult?

A missing carotid artery is very rare (less than 0.01% of the population) and it is more common for the left carotid artery to be missing than the right.

The information here might help you and your husband Internal carotid agenesis | Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center (GARD) – an NCATS Program.

Hi, im new to this group and my mother just had hemorrhagic stroke, shes in critical condition and the neuro Dr sent her for an angiogram they found out that she doesn't have neither of her main arteries her carotid artieries they stop at her jaw line. They said she was born this way and the arteries in the back of her neck are the ones that have been supplying blood flow and oxygen to her brain. They said theres not much that can be done by this? That cant put stents because those arteries don't lead to the brain. Is there anything that can be done or a specialist we can talk to that might have more info, shes only 51yrs old and shes now in a comma. My mother had no other issues has always been healthy. Please help

Hi rmorino2

Welcome to NeuroTalk though I am sorry that it is in such sad circumstances.

I have no wisdom to offer you but want you to know that I am thinking of you and your mother.
