Question Re: Epidural Shots And Coritsol Levels

I just had my coritisol levels checked with an ACTH stim test and the levels were so low the doc called in some cortisone right away and wants me to go in for more tests.....she said the shot MAY have caused this but is rare....I remember Bobbi mentioning this..that the shot could affect adrenal levels.....how common is this? She said if I got sick I could get real sick and it was soon after my third injection...just happened to be getting adrenals checked for other reason....after seeing her post I am wondering if that is why...

It's my understanding that steroids (used in some procedures/injections) can have an adverse affect on the adrenal glands within some patients.

I haven't read a great deal about it, but ... knew (by that sinking feeling of my heart falling to the pit of my stomach) when I found out that that is what I was feeling/experiencing. I'm very fortunate in the respect that the doc I see for chronic pain management counseling worked previously as a trauma room nurse. She said that some things - for pain management - can be done without inclusion of steroids; others, even docs, have stated the same.

I don't know the stats on how many people might have unpleasant effects resulting from steroids. For me, though? It was enough to say: No more steroids.

I am happy with my decision; I think time was the "cure," and my body is getting itself back in-check. It has taken several months.

I see my doc on Wednesday and I will ask her if she can explain more about how steroids affect the glands. In the event I may not remember it all, she's really great about writing things down so I can share.

Thanks Bobbi

I have since read some stuff on the internet about these types of shots suppressing adrenal function....I just can't believe the doctors who give these shots didn't tell me this or know about it? It is rather shocking. Maybe my level was already low....I see the endo next Monday so I guess I'll find out more then. Meanwhile I am beginning to become very unhappy on this cortisone stuff....please share anything you can find out! The shots have helped so much with the pain though! I'd say 50 to 75% or more....depending on the day and what I do....sometimes it all comes back...but that was what they said would happen....nothing for sure..

And of my at 1900$ a pop is it worth it? the insurance did pick up all but my copay...but now I have to go to another doctor....and more tests.. yuk.
