Offsets

Can anyone please explain how a offset works. If I originally applied for ssi and ssdi. After finding out ssdi amount I guess I would not be eligible for ssi. But I guess I am eligible for ssi from the time I became disabled to my first payment? This is were the offset comes in to play.
Does this work out in my favor and will I get the maximum allowed amount??
Please help, thank you

Im not sure what you mean offset?

If you are on workmans comp, there is an 80% rule.....You cant make more than 80% of your working wages, so thats when I know the offset kicks in.....Now once your off WC your SS would be based on your previous 5 years of earnings and the offset is removed.

Janke has explained the way SS calculates concurrent benefits in-depth multiple times and some of the finer points are still a bit confusing to me, so I'll provide a link: Social Security - The Red Book - Concurrent Benefits and Employment Supports

You should be aware that your SSI backpay will be determined at your local office first and the SSDI backpay is done after, so it will take longer. If something a like a WC offset is also a factor, expect additional delays.
