Roasting Chinese Chesnuts?
 

One of the few crops that I get on my property each year that the Squirrels, otherwise known as "tree rats" do not consume before I get to them are my Chestnuts from a Chinese Chestnut tree.

It is looking like this years crop will be plentiful and I have never done anything with them in previous years, ended up putting them outside again for either the deer or the squirrels to eat, go figure. :)

So, does anybody have any good ideas on how to prepare Chestnuts for human bean consumption! :>)

I know they have to be roasted and saw some sites saying shell first, some not, some say slit the chestnut, hmmmmmmmmn, looking for suggestions.

I may be so wrong and sure won't be the first or last time.
Though the picture you have posted looks to me like what we call the buckeye, I have searched and can't find any pictures of what you say is the chinese chestnut.
I live in the buckeye state and thus the reason for the when asked where you come from and say Ohio you are called the "worthless nut" as the buckeye has no use that I'm aware of.
Now I know that there is a candy called the buckeye that I love which is peanut butter balls dipped in choc. made to look like a buckkeye.
I'll be interested in seeing if any knows the difference in these "nuts"!
