Aubade

There stalks the silent pad of the bold first light
it’s prey the darkness that must die or take flight,
soon there will be only shadow that’s left to sight
then finally the break of day and the end of night.

Boy on a beach

He did a little dance
as he threw each pebble as far as he could
then took the stance
a tiny athlete paused, foot on driftwood
mind one of intent
waiting for the crashing waves to wilt
throwing arm bent
before he let fly once again at full tilt
looking around
for a witness to share his personal best
eyeing the ground
for certain stones ignoring all the rest.
I shouted with thumbs up ‘well done’
he beamed at me, my boy, my son.

Across the way

I wonder if you’re fast asleep or awake
in the room across the way,
I do not know from the sounds you make,
in darkness across the way.
Should I softly knock asking if all’s well
on your door across the way
I dare not for of your feelings I cannot tell
so awake in my own bed I stay
thinking of you across the way.

Entangled

If you can still all, under a butter moon glow
you will feel me brush past.
A vapid sentience as our paths cross the flow
and lay together in the vast.
For brief moments we will each other know
that for us has this been cast
and though the winds of time again do blow
we entangled souls will last.

A Slight chance of love

I read in the paper that the omens were good,
as foretold by the pattern of stars up above,
I know it's all rubbish but I still think we should
as long as you agree there's a slight chance of love.

Niggs, you sound so loving (as a parent) and Romantic. Your first poem brings to mind "Tiger, Tiger" by Blake, a child's book we had read (Who is the Beast?) and all the animals of prey who have crossed my path. Across the sea I like to read your words here.

Aubade -a poem or piece of music appropriate to the dawn or early morning.

I like you bring me new words to learn.

My Pleasure . You're most kind and I am, as always, grateful to be able to bring a little light.

Nigel,
I had been checking often and today; here you are.

Again, the visuals; I see the boy on the beach. Love the thumbs up.....begin wondering are you remembering days gone by....

I also feel your hesitation; careful so as not to be rebuked.

But; then; should you risk the possibility of even the slightest chance.....

Thank you for brightening my evening with a smile.

Yes I am remembering Gerry

It was on a beach in Wales with my son at age 6.

Always since I first met her 26 years ago, now shared with my son and daughter. Glad you enjoyed.

Aubade

I like that I learned something new today, I suspect much like Kicker...The title of this one tells us that it's going to be a poem set in the early morning hours (an aubade is a kind of morning love poem or a song of dawn).

I like how yours was rounded, simple yet with strong visualisation. I did a little further searching and I say with a "sigh" I read Philip Larkin Aubade. Nigg, it gave me great pleasure to come back and read the rest of your prose. Your love for your wife and boy, I assume this is who they are, is so staunchly uplifting after venturing off to read Larkin, who, I must say is quite good really, when read in the right setting... to put into in context, sat in hospital recovering slowly from major surgery, wife of a recovering alcoholic ... not so much lol...

Nigg, next time, I look forward to you taking the chance to step out across the darkened passage, just the touch or light caress of a hand from a loved one can bring so much to ones life. I'd go so far as to say some 25yrs down the married pathway now, it's the handholding, the kiss to the brow, the gentle touch or caress that says far more to me than those heady days of lust & passion, not that they're dead, I just find more meaning in the other. Haha, DB I'm sure would be the first to say the opposite.
