Introduction

Hello. I am the mom to an adolescent son who is recovering from a concussion.

His concussion symptoms were quite severe initially, and we are grateful that he has come a long way. He's rounding the bend of the first month now, however, and as he's still suffering quite a bit we're in the post concussion syndrome diagnosis now.

I'm going to be reading and reading and I'm very grateful to everyone who has posted before me and who has replied and I appreciate that you are all here for support.

I'm sure that I'm going to learn a lot from reading here, but right now, this morning, just knowing that there is a community of people who truly understand our reality right now is very important to me. I've grown very sad and feel very alone as most of my friends haven't demonstrated a genuine understanding of what we are going through. I find myself often thinking, since the accident, I think I need to work on finding better friends...

but that is for another time, after my son is recovered. Anyway, thank you for being here and providing this forum.

Lorax,

Welcome to NeuroTalk. I'm sorry to hear you son is struggling so. It is difficult for a mom to see a child struggle, especially with the unknowns of concussion. If it was a broken leg, the recovery is understood. Not so with concussions.

For those friends who you think may be worth the effort, there are some simple online explanations you could offer them. This web site has some good explanations, more oriented for adults but still worthwhile.

The information at Traumatic Brain Injury is more in-depth.

Please feel free to ask or tell us anything about you and your son's struggles. How did he suffer his concussion? What symptoms is he struggling with? What 'acute' concussion treatment has be received? What have the doctors recommended?

My best to you.

Lorax,

I hope your son recovers quickly.

I often felt bad for the young folks on here who didn't have some maturity from life experience to help with recovery from a really strange and complex issue like pcs.

I lost several friends during my recovery but found out I had 2 friends who know what a friend is, actually simpler that way.

Bud
