MG update aka thymectomy good
Briefly:
53 yo male at time of initial symptoms. Developed occular symptoms Aug/Sept 2014, progressed to general mg in weeks. Diagnosed Nov/Dec 2014. Prescribed Mestinon 60 mg 2x per day (180 mg daily). Blood test positive for acetylcholine receptor antibody. Did my research, decided on thymectomy, my neurologist agrees. Thymectomy performed May 2015. Today, Jan 2018: Daily Mestinon dosage 60-120 mg. Symptom free without taking meds, but being a good patient and continuing to take my Mestinon. Remission soon, hopefully. |
Update.
Saw my neuro last month. I've been mestinon and MG symptom free since 1/1/19. Doc says I'm cured. Cured and not in remission because of the thymectomy.

Age problem?
That is great. I'm would like to know if there is an age limit for having a thymectomy? Does anyone know?

Hi remremrem
Welcome to NeuroTalk :). Usually people with MG who are 60 or younger can be considered for a thymectomy. This information might help you. Thymectomy - Myasthenia Gravis News. All the best. |
Thymectomy age
The medical field used to use 60 years old as the absolute cut off age for considering thymectomies. Now, many surgeons take other things into consideration before they deny surgery - size of the thymus, severity of symptoms, age at onset of symptoms. For those that are looking into it, it might be worth meeting with several doctors for several medical opinions.
