Remitting - relapsing course?

I believe my PN, which showed up in full force June of this year, may have been preceded by an earlier "attack" 3 years prior. They both began with a few days of sharp very brief painful "tingles" or zaps between the toes, then went on to areas in the feet of pain and numbness.

The event 3 years ago was not as severe as the event 3 months ago, and largely resolved over about 2 years, with only mild residual decreased sensation in a couple areas of the soles of my feet.

This year's event started the same way, but there is much more pain than last time, and so far I am not sure the symptoms have peaked yet, or if they ever will.

Has anyone heard of anything like this? Does this suggest an autoimmune cause, or does it suggest anything else in particular?

Thank you,
RedRoan
