neuropsych WAIS results and brain fog

Hello everybody,

I have been dealing with memory problems, trouble processing information, and the overall sensation of "brain fog" for about 3 years now. I have a history of concussion. I used to be very bright and high functioning and now my life just consists of me operating in a severe haze. I am extremely depressed.

Doctors have attributed my current symptoms to psychosomatization and it was not until recently that I got neuropsych testing ...

I scored in the 99th+ percentile on verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and full scale IQ. My processing speed was around the 21st percentile. Would the relatively low processing speed account for some of the issues I described above? Would that be a result of concussion?
If anyone has dealt with similar issues and has seen improvement, I would be so happy to hear that :( My motivation to keep moving forward is dwindling more and more each day.

Well, I was told, the one year mark, 5 year mark and 10 year mark.....After 10 years dont expect much, but never give up!....I have to every 3 or 7 years do the syk test for SS.....results always the same.

Yeah that sounds about right ...
What sorts of problems are you still dealing with? What are your neuropsych results like?

Have you tried any meds to help clear the haze?

Know the feel

I know how you feel my friend... Had a concussion more than a decade ago were a car ran me on my bike. Passed blood tests and even a few scans (CT-Scan, MRI,etc...) in the last year and every test are looking normal!

And, well. 4 year's ago I started to feel really extremely tired for no reason, felt like it was going away (was putting this on the stress of going back to school) and exactly 3 year's ago (in early 2016); BAM all of the PCS symptoms suddenly came back (migraines, sleeping problems, chronic fatigue & brain fog, etc...) exploded and I haven't been able to work since....

I tried to take a few meds that simply made me feel worse, so I started to take some CBD oil since a few months ago. It seems to help, but if there's a recovery, it's going on really slow. So, yeah, feels depressing but just to say that I understand how you feel and you are not alone living this.

I'm surprised the NeuroPsych Report did not claim you are malingering. The scales at the opposite end of the spectrum often lead the NP to make such a statement.

Did you do a memory test, like the Wechsler Memory tests?

I had similar scales except my processing is at 10%.

Those with the highest WAIS scores tend to struggle the most because they focus on the premorbid function and see every effort as a failure or slow/foggy.

Instead, use your intelligence to find new ways to get things done. You do not have to run at 100 mph just because you used to be able to run 110 mph. If you can make steady progress at 50 mph, move on.

My neuro, after reviewing my test results, was amazed that I could get so much done. Most people with processing at 10% are almost non-functional in a general sense. Then he looked at my intelligence based scales and realized I was working through my limits with my intelligence.

btw, My visual short term memory is at 12%. My auditory short term memory is at 5%. I can't remember squat. I can't remember the 8 characters I type into those black dot password fields so I learn to cluster or chunk them. When I post here on NT, I reread my post at least 3 times to stay on track with my thoughts.

So, figure out how you can learn work-arounds and accommodations to overcome your limitations. With your intelligence, it should be a piece of cake.

The experts have found that those who accept their limits as real and work with them and find work-arounds do the best.
