Recognizing and Appropriately Treating Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults | Diabetes Spectrum

"Typically, the clinical features of type 1 diabetes seen in LADA include a lower BMI compared to what is typical in type 2 diabetes and autoimmunity against one or more of the following antibodies: islet cell autoantibodies (ICA), autoantibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), tyrosine phosphatase–related islet antigen 2 (IA-2), and insulin autoantibodies (IAA) (4,5)."

The designation of LADA

--was originally made so that clinicians and others would not assume that all diabetes that struck at older ages was assumed to be Type 2; you might remember that at one time autoimmune diabetes was often referred to as "juvenile diabetes", which can, of course, be misleading.

But yes, a small but important subset of diabetes that strikes at older ages is autoimmune in nature, as is young onset Type I.
