Tourettes after Dental Work ?

Hi All,

I have an 8 year old who has had some minor tics for 6 months or so. (throat clearing, mouth stretching)

He had 4 baby teeth pulled over the last 2-3 weeks and now is exibiting full blown tourettes type behaviour. Stomping, grunting, hitting table, (sometimes himself, etc...)

We were so concerned we took him to ER yesterday. All bloodwork and urine good.

He had laughing gas and local anestisia for the extraction....this is the only thing that has changed. Does anyone have experience with this? Appreciate it, and thanks.

Hi
Yes, I know of many kids with tics/TS who have had symptoms exacerbated after dental work.

There are some parents who have found very specific types of mouthpieces have helped as it seems the issue may be related to TMJ (transmandibular joint)

There are 2 articles here about this You searched for mouthpiece tics - ACN Latitudes

Not all kids with tics, or all who react to dental work have this issue though.

Thank you, we will look into getting a mouthpiece for him and see if it helps.
