Unable to wear shoes or socks for over 7 months
 

Hi, found this forum and am so glad that I did. I didn't realize just how many people have PN. In my case it started to be very noticeable about 9 months ago (I'm a 65 year old male). For the last 7 months I've been unable to wear shoes or socks on one foot. I had sepsis back in October, nearly the whole of the bride of my foot swelled up and then burst. I had nurses round every day to change the dressing until the pain wasn't so bad and the wound had pretty much healed. Since that time I have had the burning feet, legs (somewhat) and my foot and lower leg continually swollen. I can't wear shoes or socks, not even soft, roomy, slippers. I only get out for doctor's appointments; I wear a pair of sandals with one strap at the heel and one over the bridge of the foot, very loose. I can tolerate the sandals for about an hour but I suffer with severe burning for the next day or so. My wife applies some pain cream twice a day which takes the edge of it. I must say thought that some people here have it a lot worse than me - I hope you're able to get some relief.

I actually wanted to ask if anyone could suggest some orthopedic(?) shoes that I might be able to wear with bridge of the foot pain like I have. I see lot's of shoes online for PN sufferers but don't see any that address the burning bridge. I'd really appreciate any suggestions or advice. Thank you.

The most comfortable thing I have found is buying the thick white athletic socks that Costco has, then turning them inside out so the smooth side is against the skin. Then, I wear Sketchers slip on leisure shoes with the memory foam insoles. Unfortunately, it sounds like your sensitivity is much worse than mine - so not sure if that solution will do anything for you.

Best of luck finding something that helps. I remember days when my feet were on fire, leaving work, and ripping my shoes off the second I got in the car because they were burning so bad. Then driving home barefoot.... Fortunately for me, things have improved quite a bit, and the foot pain has gone from "unbearable" to "somewhat uncomfortable". I hope you will eventually find some relief as well

i wear shoes with velcro straps, this way i can alter them easily during the day across the bridge of the foot to relieve pressure from swelling or pain from walking or standing.
