Very hard, painful lump in gum after extraction??
 

Hello!

I had a tooth extracted 2 weeks ago. The tooth had a silver filling put in a week before this. The filling was very deep and I ended up with irreversible pulpitis which caused intense pain so dentist chose to remove tooth. This was done under sedation due to the fact I have pretty severe dentist phobia. The extraction took 2 hours due to the tooth (my back upper molar) being jammed against one of my wisdom tooth (which have not appeared as of yet). The dentist said it was the worst extraction she's ever had to do. She had to section the tooth and it took 3 dentists to get it out in the end. I was quite aware of what was going on by the end of the appointment and it was pretty traumatic.

The wound is healing up well (a wee splinter of tooth worked its way out the gum tonight, it must have been left behind). However, ever since the extraction, I can feel a very hard lump in my gum protruding into my cheek. I felt it the moment I woke up from my post sedation sleep but dismissed it as my mouth just feeling different due to the missing tooth.

However, the feeling of something poking into my cheek has not diminished and I had a feel with my finger and I can feel a very hard large prominent lump in the gum. The lump is above the extraction site and feels sharp and very tender to touch. It is glaringly obvious it is not a normal part of my mouth.

What could it be?

I will go back to see the dentist however, due to it being christmas/new year, that won't be for a while.

Any ideas what it could be? I'm freaking out a bit as I'm worried it might be a wisdom tooth dislodged or something and I am scared I might need another extraction. The last one was traumatic enough.

OP: Hope the dentist doesn't have to go back in and do more work..you've been thru it sounds like. Besides the Myrrh Tincture I mentioned to the above poster, another great healer for dental issues is Oil of Oregano, a dab now and then in the area and/or adding some drops to your toothpaste. I have jars of Coconut Oil toothpaste which I buy from Now Foods in tubes but transfer to a 2 oz clean jar and add drops of essential oils and these keep my mouth even healthier. I won't use commerical toothpastes with all the added nasty stuff they use. CO is a great healer.

The hard area that you have described could be a cyst, a large bony fragment, a piece of tooth or a fracture in the bony ridge. It would be wise to have a periapical AND panoramic radiograph to help diagnose the problem. Depending on what it is will determine if or what treatment is needed.

The sooner you have this diagnosed the better.

So Friday I had a tooth pulled that had been infected pretty bad for along time. I got a bone graph done after the tooth got pulled. The following days whenever the Motrin wore off I was in so much pain where I was crying like a throbbing pain. Today Monday I woke up and had this white stuff coming out along with a horrible smell. I easily clean it up and this white stuff keeps coming. I also pressed just a little bit with a qtip and it look like liquid came out maybe puss? I have no way of getting ahold of the doctor he is out till Friday. I left him a message and I also tried to contact other dentists to see if they help me but they won’t since they didn’t do the work she said if I was that concerned to go to er but what’s that gonna do ? I’ve been taking amoxicillin the higher strength one since day 2 and Motrin every 8 hours any advice or if this is normal. Ty

The white discharge could be pus. Your dentist who performed the extraction should have an emergency contact number to call to cover for him while he is away. If he does not, look up an oral surgeon or periodontist and call them for an emergency visit to take an xray and a clinical look at the area. The surgeon that you consult with may be able to contact the treating dentist who extracted the tooth, if needed.

When did you have the upper molars extracted? Was that the same day as the front tooth?

Ty for your response. I noticed a liquid coming out beyond the white and it’s smells horrendous and no he didn’t leave no contact he just said if you need to leave a message I may stop and check but I’ll be out of town. I had the other teeth pulled years ago. Only this tooth pulled. I’m going to er per another office told me to do they have on call dentists but I still don’t see the point of going cause don’t think they will do anything but who knows. So if it’s infection does it have to all come out? All I know my mouth taste and smells so bad I can’t take it ugh 😞

Dentists and Physicians always have an emergency contact when they are away from the office. They either have an answering service or another doctor on call or they leave their cell number as the emergency number. Any dentist or doctor that does not do that, is irresponsible. If you left a message and no one got back to you, that is also irresponsible.

The reason to see someone at this time is to determine if it is an infection. Based on the diagnosis it may require some surgical or other intervention at this time before it spreads further into the jawbone or up into the sinus cavity. An infection would also contaminate the bone graft material and the graft would either eventually fall out or need to be removed.

The unhealed areas in your upper left quadrant are from extractions that were done years ago?? They look like open wounds. Just curious, has your dentist commented on those areas?

By any chance do you smoke? The chemicals in tobacco or pot can prevent proper healing of the jaw bone and oral tissue. You could be getting an odor from those areas as well as the front.

It's up to you to find a dentist to go to. If the hospital has a dentist on staff that is who they would call in. If they don't have a dentist on staff, there is nothing they can do for you.
