Long-term cognitive decline after a single mTBI
 

What is the current consensus in the literature/research on whether or not a single mTBI leads to long-term lasting cognitive decline or accelerated brain atrophy (greater than the yearly rate due to aging)?

There is not much consensus except that emotional stability or instability plays a big part in long term progression.

This broad question cannot be answered much more.

A more specific question, type of injury, age at injury, life style, personality, and many more variables play a big part.

I've seen some literature that an inflammatory process is kicked off on injury that may last a very very long time, possibly attacking and destroying healthy nerve cells in the process. I was wondering if there had been any conclusion reached in mTBI cases. Thank you.

I've never seen such a claim. Inflammation is a known issue.

This "attacking healthy nerve cells......" does not sound right.
