Thalamus Stroke causes dizzy spells?

My friend had a acute left thalamus stroke in 2015 and when he had the stroke he was numb down one side, he had nystagmus and a series of very bad dizzy spells that would start suddenly and then stop a few moments later. Only his thalamus was effected and the area of thalamus effected is rather small according to him. He's much better now but we were curious.

Has anybody with a thalamus stroke experienced this? Is anybody familiar with thalamus stroke and/or thalamus injury and has seen this collection of symptoms before? How common is this?
