my story (partial)

Hello everyone, I am new here and very pleased to have found this place. About 42 years ago, when I was five I suffered a brain injury ( I was hit by a car) which changed my personality from a happy outgoing child to one that was dark and brooding most of the time. I had to relearn how to do certain things such as learning how to walk and talk again. Over the years I have seemed to adapt very well, though there are still some problems. I have a very hard time controlling my temper which can be volital at times. Though I have never hurt or threatened my family, my verbal abuse of my family is shameful. I do see a therapist and take a mood stabilizer. I have had a hard time getting a doc to help me because I am very well spoken, and seem well adjusted. It was only after my wife went with me to a psychiatrist and convinced them the seriousness of the situation. Can you believe that? This was about two years ago and things are much better. My attention span is very short as well, and there are times I seem to just fade in and out which doesn't happen too often, maybe once or twice a week. Well that's the short of it. This seems like a caring place, and I hope that I will be able to make new friends and gather support. Thanks for the welcome! :Wave-Hello:

Hi Credo and welcome to NeuroTalk. What a journey you've had! I'm so sorry.

But you've found an excellent place full of caring and supportive people. It sounds to me like maybe you'd find the Traumatic Brain Injury forum helpful. YOu can find it right here. http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forumdisplay.php?f=92

I'm glad you found us.

Hi credo --

I sure like your name. I wish I believed more of the time. I am so doubtful that it's painful. Darn it!

I'm so sad that you were in a car accident when you were so young. What a very hard thing for you to have gone through... and all the changes to your life. (((((((credo)))))))

I have a bit of brain damage from falling and hitting my head on the brick floor of my condo ... there was hydrogen sulfide in it, which I didn't know, and I fell a lot, but I didn't understand why.

So I know what you mean about a short temper.

I just hate it.

I can be soooo good, and so organized and patient, and then all of a sudden it's as if I've used up all my energy and I hit rock bottom and I just can't be diplomatic any more.

I hate talking on the phone... writing is much better because it's slower so it works better with my thinking speed now, and I can stop writing more easily than I can keep myself from yelling when I hit my limit.

I'm curious if you take B12 at all (the Methylcobalamin form) -- it's helped me a lot.

Also, do you play games to increase your attention span at all? I've played so many hours of games... if I hadn't been sick in bed most of the time, it would be a horror that I played that many hours of them... but ... you know what, I think my therapist who was teaching me compensation techniques was right... it is possible to regrow some brain cells. (I'm not sure she said "brain cells" she might have said nerves...

I better stop writing because I'm fading.

I hope you enjoy it here.

There are some great people here, and a LOT of information.

Welcome!!!!!!!

Well, it's taken me around a half an hour to find a Welcome smilie for you...
I've visited a lot of sites to find it...

but it's a bit blinky....

so I'll put it down here....

so it doesn't bother you while you read the message....

(Hope you like it) :)
