OP: Sorry you had to end up here, but welcome and glad you found this group. There are many causes for neuropathy and I truly believe there is a reason...I hear idopathic a lot but don't buy that, there is a reason. My issue started with a damaged and complications from a hip replacement and then a knee infection some yrs later, I do all supplements and 1 ibuprofen/1 extra strength tylenol every 6 hrs with FOOD in stomach. Plus I use many topicals to reduce and calm the pain.

The group here has a lot of supportive info. Take care.

Hi Brandonmccluskey

Welcome to NeuroTalk :).

I hope that other members who have more specific experience of peripheral neuropathy than I do will be able to offer you helpful suggestions.

Best wishes.

Neuropathy due to diabetes--

--or dysregulation of sugar levels in the pre-diabetic range comes in somewhere between 30 and 40 percent of all incidences, but that still leaves the majority of neuropathy sufferers with other reasons for it, and yes, a good third or so remain stubbornly "idiopathic", though a lot of that designation depends on how extensive the testing for causes is. That tends to vary a lot based on where you go and who your physician is.

I like to refer people to start just to this Quest Diagnostics paper of laboratory blood tests for causes of neuropathy, just to give people a sense of the wide variety of things that can cause nerve problems (there are over 200 known separate neuropathy etiologies, and probably more that haven't been discovered yet):

Hi Brandonmccluskey, and welcome!

Neuropathy has so many possible causes that I hope you'll ask your doctor about your symptoms so there can be some investigation and treatment.

Peripheral Neuropathy Fact Sheet | National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

It would be helpful for the doctor to know how long you've had the symptoms and whether anything in particular seems to trigger them or makes them worse.

I guess I am lucky in a sense. My neuropathy is in my feet but I don't have the burning that some folks have. I have what some call "foot drop". I have to lift my feet or my toes will drag the floor. I am wearing carbon fiber braces because I am so active I have broken 2 sets of regular plastic braces. I had stage 3 colon cancer 5 years ago and the doctors blame the chemo or radiation for the problem. I have been through tests and they cannot find any other problems. I have been taking meds for epilepsy for 45 years. It is controlled completely now but from what I have researched I really think that the medicine that completely stopped my seizures is the cause of my neuropathy. When I started taking keppra 10 years ago I started noticing a slight limp a couple years later. Things went downhill from there. Anyway, my doc that I see doesn't think that is the cause and I am not going to change meds. I am 62 now and still working. As they say, it is what it is....
