Sinus perforation
 

Hello guys.
I'm new to this forum because I'm actively seeking advice on the following matter: My upper wisdom teeth were extracted two weeks ago. They were doing fine but had to be extracted because of their position (horizontal and deep). Anyways, the surgery was painful and long. On my right side, the surgeon ended up performing the sinus perforation and told me that it has been repaired during the surgery.
After two days, I started getting really bad sinus headaches on the right side, bad odor, and a horrible taste in my mouth. I went back to the surgeon and yup I had a bad infection on the sinus spot. He put me on amoxollin and it started getting better but disclosed after a few days that my sinus perforation has apparently not been repaired (or it was but it somehow didn't work idk). He's now suggesting me another surgery and I'm frightened. He's telling me to go with full anesthesia which freaks me out....At the same time I'm scared that this infection will come back again after surgery (though he's given me another 10 days of antibiotics so that we are sure there's no infection while performing another surgery).

I am so sorry to hear about your ordeal with the oral surgery and now a sinus perforation. I have had several oral surgeries from wisdom teeth extractions to having all of my teeth removed to be replaced with dental implants. Before the implants could be placed, the surgeon had to build back my bone where my molars and wisdom teeth were at by doing a bone graft and also a sinus lift. I have had 14 hours of oral surgery and being put under anesthesia. My first surgery was 8.5 hours long.

Did the surgeon explain to you what exactly he had done to repair the sinus perforation?

Did you follow the strict guidelines he gave after removing your wisdom teeth and repairing the sinus perforation, such as not blowing nose or sneezing through your nose, instead sneeze through your mouth?

Most sinus perforations will heal on their own and it can take 3 months or so to completely heal.
The sinus perforations that tend not to heal on their own are:
*if they are very large
*if there is a piece of broken root still in that area
*if there is an infection
*if the patient smokes
*if the patient drinks through a straw before the extraction site healed
*if there was a dry socket after the extraction.

It may behoove you to see a different oral surgeon for a another opinion before you have the second surgery. You would need to bring your pre and post op xrays... or have them emailed from the first surgeons office over to the second office prior to your appointment.

Hi there,

Unfortunately the second surgery has also been done. I’m in the Netherlands and unlike the US I cannot just step to a dental surgeon. I was referred to one and since he didn’t have time (thank Gof since he messed up first time) I was sent to another surgeon. I had my surgery on Wednesday so today is day 3.
Of course I’m experiencing pain, that is normal. Other than that, I’m anxious and hoping that it is repaired this time. I see a blue dot on the spot of perforation.....is that normal?

A little update: dead anxious because my nose feels so stuffy and congested infact I might have blown my nose a little while I was crying (urgh). I am so scared that it might go wrong again....what to do now?

I'm praying for you hun! I hope it heals right this time. Please don't panic. Use saline solution to help with your stuffy nose to help you breath better. Just avoid blowing your nose. One of the key things my surgeon had told me was to keep my stress level down to a minimum. When you become anxious and stress your body the blood doesn't circulate as well to help your body heal. I know it is easier said than to do. It was 1 of the things I tried my best to follow. Although I wasn't really stressed, I was more so rushing and running around. But, it was 12 days before Christmas too. There really wasn't any time to just lounge around and be lazy because kf the holiday fast approaching. Just remember not to blow your nose or use a straw. You can also cause a dry socket which is also very painful. How did the new surgeon repair the sinus perforation?
