Is this Neuropathy;

Hi. I am 36 y male with no previous issues I had my first vaccine shot before 1.5 month 2 hours later I started to get pins and needles all over my body and first days I had numnbessin my legs and arms but now they are less. I don't have motor issues or pain. When I put clothes my skin is more sensitive. I visited 3 neurologist and they said me that I dont have neuropathy and its anxious. I did Emg and it was fine and Friday I have to do MRI. A lot of blood test , b12 and allergic antibodies everything's OK. Only one doctor told me OK if you have sensory neuropathy, we can't find it, try to managed it or take Lyrica. I don't know what to do. I saw 2 psychiatrist and they told me that I am hypochondriac. The truth is that I am hypochondriac from my 16, but I am a very functional man and always I managed it. So. What you believe ; Its anxious or I developed neuropathy from the vaccine. Is that possibly;

kiwi33 04-05-2021 04:15 PM

Hi Tzolo

More questions than answers; what (and why) were you vaccinated against?

Why were you prescribed Lyrica?

Do the two psychiatrists you have seen have any reason(s) for labelling you as hypochondriac?

I hope that you find getting answers to these questions helpful.

Tzolo 04-05-2021 05:38 PM

I was vaccinated for covid 19, I had the Pfizer's shot. One of doc that saw me, said that if you have dysesthesia , pins and needles feeling with no reason, as your exams are ok, you should try Lyrica to see how it will go. The docs as they didn't find anything in blood test, MRI and clinical examination said that we cant help you, maybe its in your mind you should see a psychiatrist. So , my thought is, can I have neuropathy sfn by having dysesthesia . Should I do a skin biopsy or its too early..

tnthomas 04-05-2021 06:49 PM

@Tzolo,

3 neurologist said you have don't have Peripheral Neuropathy.

2 psychiatrist said that you are a hypochondriac.

Just my opinion- I think you should make a serious effort to resolve the

hypochondria first, and above all else.

kiwi33 04-05-2021 10:37 PM

Tzolo you were given a vaccine for Covid-19 which is very common. The doctors used the confusing word "dysesthesia" which could mean anything (it is just a fancy way of saying "abnormal sensation").

Doctors have been known to use fancy non-clinical words to impress their patients before and will again.

Tzolo 04-06-2021 01:55 AM

Is there any test I can do to figure out if this is from the vaccine or sensoryneuropathy;

The problem is that I should do the skin biopsy to find answers. Because Emg was normal and clinical exams. So if I have neuropathy, accute , only sfn sensory could be. R6he question is can I have skin biopsy so soon; only 1.5 mont after these symptom

kiwi33 04-06-2021 04:32 PM

Tzolo I suggest that you discuss the possibility you raised with the doctor who gave you the Covid-19 vaccine.

It would be a good idea to read what is, in bold, shown at the bottom of all Neurotalk pages: Always consult your doctor before trying anything you read here.

I took the Moderna Covid 19 vaccine 6 weeks ago. Within a week I developed numb arms, legs, hands and feet along with tingling and other sensations. I visited the ER and neurologist, no one admitted or for that matter denied it was from the vaccine. However I’m positive IT IS from the vaccine. I was put on gabapentin which at least helps me sleep and takes the edge off the pains. I notice the symptoms are very similar to the people who have had the rabies vaccines and hopefully will resolve with time as theirs did.

Welcome Prince227. :welcome_sign: I hope things get better for you.

I'm going through the run around myself. I feel so helpless and scared. I've done so much research and found similar things. I'm on Medrol as of now. It's weird feeling. But the intensity for now is cut back but dispersive to other areas but not with as much intensity.
My shot was in the left arm.
3 ER trips and two Primary trips Friday I'm seeing a Neurologist. I've had CRP, CMP, CBC, TPO,ESR,RA, ANA Screen, DDimer, Troponin blood test with EKG, Chest x-ray,ultrasound to check for DVT in the legs, MRI for Brain, MRA all came back normal. MRI was done on my Cervical spine and I have a herniated disc at C6 and more degenerative disc disease than they would like but nothing life threatening or anything that could cause these sporadic nerve issues. They believe that it's my immune response to the Vaccine and if I feel Muscle weakness to go in. I've never had this issue in my life. I'm fully vaccinated and had the flu shot once and reacted fine. This is not cool and I really want answers. What's going on with my body? Why is this reacting this way? Test me? Figure it out. I don't want this to happen to anyone else and if we can figure the trigger and have something to counter it for people with these issues I would let them check me out.

I am sorry that you feel like this but if you are waiting for the neurological community to figure out why this is happening you are likely in for a long wait. Neurologists don't have a really good handle on why commonly known disorders cause neuropathy much less a brand new one.

The best course of action is to eat healthy and stay calm. Assuming that you actually have nerve damage which is a big assumption at this point, most acutely triggered neuropathies resolve over time. Hang in there

JimD 06-10-2021 08:36 AM

I am in a not an exactly similar situation but somewhat relevant I think. I developed SFN 5 years ago out of nowhere. I was 50 at the time with no health problems. After months of every blood test, EMG, QSART, etc., no reason for it could be found. After about a year it started fading and for the past 4 years I would have a flare up which would last a few days and then I would go back to normal for months at a time. When I say flare-up, I mean tingling feeling up to my knees, burning feet, and some numbness and pain when I walk. Well, I had COVID back in March which lasted 3 weeks. 2 weeks after I recovered, I had what I though was a flare-up as I woke up one morning with the tingling and it progressed to the usual symptoms. I had not had a flare-up for 6 months before this. I got the Moderna vaccine at the beginning of May and had my 2nd shot on May 29th. I am now in my 7th week of this flare -up and it shows no signs of going away. Did the virus bring it on? Did having the shots keep it going? Will it go back to normal? I drive myself crazy with these questions that NOBODY ever has the answer to. I have been on varying doses of Gabapentin for 5 years and honestly I don't know if it ever worked. It certainly doesn't seem like it is now even after I upped the dosage. My biggest fear is that this has progressed to the point where it will not go way again. It's hard to live with that fact, especially when there has never been a reason found for it to happen in the first place. Sorry for ranting on. Just very frustrated as I am sure we all are.

Lara 06-10-2021 07:24 PM

Hi Jim, you're not ranting. It's totally understandable that you're frustrated. You've been through a lot this year by the sound of it, having had the virus and all.

Hopefully your symptoms will settle. I can understand how you must feel not knowing if the actual virus or the vaccine or even combination of both has exacerbated your neuropathy.

There are people on these forums who had absolutely no problems when they had their vaccines except perhaps for a sore arm. There are others who describe much worse for themselves or their family members. It's a bit of a dice game to me. I haven't read of anyone else except you who actually had Coronavirus and then had 2 vaccines on top of that. That seems like a big hit to your body.

You should check out some of the information coming out about what they're calling Long Covid. I'd probably be hoping that it was exacerbated by the vaccines and your body has reacted a lot and that it will settle in the coming weeks.

take care there.

Coronavirus and the Nervous System -NINDS

Coronavirus and the Nervous System | National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

In the section "What are possible long term neurological complications of Covid-19" - "Nerve damage, including peripheral neuropathy", this NINDS article describes neuropathy symptoms post covid in some people "weeks and months" after their infection.

I agree Neurology is in its infancy. There are many tests and a litany of names of conditions, signs and symptoms. However there are but a few blunt treatments that may or may not work.
I agree that the best course of action is create the conditions that allow the body to heal itself with a strategy something like this.

1. Good healthy diet. Consider intermittent fasting. Appropriate Supplements.

2. Adopting a positive attitude, personal responsibility and mindset of self treatment and recovery.

3. Exercise, rest and recovery (wherever possible.) Setting up the whole day for a great sleep.

4. Engaging the parasympathetic nervous system, as you say by remaining calm, by meditation, breathing exercises etc. The brain's function is to keep us safe, however sometimes it overdoes that and makes us anxious when anxiety is not appropriate. The first step is to take a moment and realise, at times of anxiety, that the brain can sometimes over react in its quest to keep us safe. A few belly breaths that engages the diaphragm and therefore engages the calming parasympathetic nervous system (automatically) is a good strategy.

5. Maintaining a circle of friends and social interaction.

JimD 06-11-2021 08:00 AM

Lara, thanks so much for your responses. It actually gave me some hope after almost losing all hope, that this could resolve. Not knowing is the worst part. I know staying positive is part of the battle, but it can be difficult when this can be so relentless.
Atticus, thank you for the strategy you posted. Seems like a good regimen and I would like to follow it.

vaccine

I wouldnt say its from the vaccine.... you just have neuropathy in my opinion. see how the gaba works for you. I started with Gaba then took Lyrica with it and then dropped the gaba due to weight gain and now just on Lyrica and dont see any inprovement... is there anything else folks are using for releif. thanks
