PN and pregnancy
 

Ive been taking Neurotin for over a year now. Last month I found out I was pregnant and stopped taking it. The pain in my left leg is unbearable at night. I don't know what to do, any suggestions?

First, tell your doctor. There are databases which tell doctors and women what the relative dangers of different medications are. Your pain doc and your OB should be able to work together with you and decide what to do.

I do not know that there is a lot of info on Neurontin, but I'm sure there is some, as people with epilepsy have babies and must stay on meds. But this is an issue for you and your docs together, as well as whatever prenatal counselling there is at your hospital.

DOCS! Big time!

I don't know your circumstances, but, meds/no meds...and stress pro and con of both have to be considered. You are in a scary place...I would call each doc or MAIL each doc a letter and get them all on the SAME PAGE about your Neuro condition and your pregnant condition...This is new turf for many..tho not all... You just have to get your docs to admit that 'maybe' someone more experienced should 'oversee'...That doesn't mean you won't see your docs..Just means that they will consult with a chief-er cheese... BUT It means you have to see that cheese first...and set the terms... I'll bet you your docs will feel better with whatever recommendations your basic docs execute and administer...so will your insurance co. I BET you as well. IF you hate what you hear from the second opinions, get thirds! Those co-pays are a whole lot cheaper than forseen/unforseen complications no one told YOU about! Seek out the best and brightest and heck! Put them to work FOR YOU!!and YOUR BABY! Think right-the kid WILL be absolutely PERFECT! - fuzzies - j

I've been to the doctor she told me, after looking it up in her book that Neurotin would be OK, but that they haven't done alot of research on it. That part worries me. I'm already at high risk because of my age. I've been researching it and I may go back on it in my second trimester when the risk for birth defects are less.
In the mean time, by night my leg burns so bad I can't even bend it and I usually just go to bed. :(

If it were me, I would get a second more qualified opinion. Unfortunately it does not appear that the doctor you consulted really helped you. But I understand why you stopped it, but I hope you did not stop it abruptly.

Can you contact your neuro, even if it's just a conversation over the phone? I mean at some point neuro patients with illnesses like MS and the like get pregnant. I would suspect that they speak to their neurologists regarding meds.
