Question: Bleeding (Period) wont stop
 

Hi all, not sure that its for sure a period, but its till otherwise know the only way I know to explain this. I've been bleeding as in a period for 4 weeks,
with maybe 2 or 3 days of light bleeding, in the 7 day area that I thought it was stopping as usual. Then it started right back up, but then started to
really get bad. I thought okay, so I missed a few periods, but I'm 49 and
have always been regular but its not unusal for me to have one time period
each year that I miss one month.

So when I miss my period in April, May, June I thought hmmm kind of odd.
But I was going to make a appointment with my doctor.

But it started in July as usual, exactly same time period and all. So I thought
okay. I've been under a lot of stress. And the weight gain I put on,
did not start in April or May, it honestly started in December or January for
sure, but I'm not positive it hadn't started before that.

But I've been starting meds since last October, and they just keep changing.
So I wasn't sure what was causing the weight changes.

So I was planning to wait till I got all the test I had scheduled and go see my primary, I've only seen, a cardiologist, pulmonist, asthma/allergist and neurologist/opthamoligist, and physical therapist in the last 3 months. The asthma doctor started before that. And I might have missed someone I'm not honestly sure, all have had contact with my primary.

Of course in the back of my mind its been a concern that possibility of pregnancy, or menopause, I guess I refuse to consider pregnancy, so I just assumed menopause.

But now I'm concerned, and scared. What can it be

I see my primary, who handles my women things, she is my best.

I don't know what is causing your bleeding but it sounds like it would be good to see your primary doctor ASAP.

Do you have all of your prescriptions filled at the same pharmacy? The reason I ask this is that I did have a problem with abnormal, heavy, mid-cycle bleeding and it turned out to be due to a combination of 2 meds where the new med was a sample that my GP had given me to try. My prescriptions are all together at one pharmacy BUT the sample had not been prescribed by my doctor so it wasn't in my computer file at the pharmacy. I live in Canada so I don't know if pharmacies are like this everywhere but when a new prescription is entered online for my file, it is automatically checked with all other prescribed meds for any possible interactions. When I asked a pharmacist about my problem bleeding AND I also then had a prescription for the sample drug I had been trying, I was told that the computer had flagged a warning when the new drug was entered and that abnormal bleeding was a possible side-effect when the new drug was taken with some other drug I was already taking. I immediately saw my GP who sincerely apologized for not checking the meds I was already taking before giving me the sample of a new drug to try. As soon as I stopped taking one of the drugs, I was fine.

So it was a reminder to me to always have my prescriptions filled by the same pharmacy AND for my doctor to always check what drugs a patient is already taking before suggesting something new. (He usually looks up new drugs during my appointment and tells me about them before prescribing anything.)

I have also heard from women who have experienced very heavy bleeding during menopause but I like the stories better where menstruation just slowing goes away .... :)

All my meds originated at the same pharmacy until they went mail order.

So yes in the sense they are all filled originally by the same pharmacy.

But because my insurance requires mail order I have to send them in
after 3 months. But my local pharmacy also keeps them all listed for
me. So that I always have a double check there when something is
added.

At this point I am not taking anything that is not prescribed. At one
point I was, but not during this mess. So I don't think that would count.

But I wouldn't have thought of that. And most of my meds are brand name,
or the exact same thing that the doctor ordered was mail order too.
We have gotten smart to order a generic that is the closest to the brand name if we know its going to get switched.

I was going through that too and I ended up having a D&C after a biopsy came back with precancerous cells. Then we tried progesterin therapy, didn't help. So now I just had another ultrasound done and I am scheduled for another biopsy next week.

My gyno asked me if I was interested in having my uterus removed and I said sure I am done with it LOL. (i'm 44 and done having kids)

I will let you know what she says after this next appt on Wed I think. Sorry that I don't have any answers but I do sympathize with you if that helps;)

Hi Donna,

Just based on what you described it sounds more like perimenopause to me. It's not uncommon to fluctuate as you describe. Then again it could be a lot of different things. I was just going to say that I have had a total hysterectomy when I was 45 and no biggie. :) But my sister kept gaining and gaining and we really thought she was pregant...she was about 42 at the time. But she had fibroids so badly that ob/gyn told her her uterus was like a sack of grapes. Anyway, she had a total hysterectomy as well and is doing fine.

And I do know that certain meds can really mess with your hormones levels. But chances are, honestly, it is probably just the age thing and perimenopause. And the real reason I say that is because my best friend, also a Donna, has this happen all the time. She can go for a few cycles just fine; then it is like a month of bleeding; then she might miss two and on and on it goes. The doc says...perimenopause...there was nothing really wrong at all. So, she just lives with and is living through it...doing very well actually. :) Oh, and I should add...we are both very close to turning 51. And I think this started with her probably around age 45 or 46.

But, yes, see your ob/gyn or primary to determine the cause.

I praised Seasonique and didn't post what happened afterwards because I don't think it's the pills. Mind you, I was given these pills to stop my excessive bleeding (I'm 30, I've been having painful, heavy cycles since my first period on my first teenager birthday!). I've been bleeding for so long that I lost track of how long it has been. My doctor did nothing and told me it was 'normal' for me. :(

I've had a few DNC's (for bleeding) before, several Laparoscopys, lots of Colposcopys with biopsies, and so on. Since my first period I went to my GYN and had the pre-cancer cells on my cervix. They seem to come and go as they please. It's been a lot of years since then.

My GYN suggested these problems come from small cysts that grow on my uterus, he diagnosed me with endosalpingiosis of the uterus. What's bizarre is about 6 months ago my mom kept calling herself 'fat' and 'bloated'. It turns out she had the same thing as I did, but hers grew to the size of a softball and they ended up doing an emergency hysterectomy (she was mad about that, too).

I was wondering if you've had any scans done (ct, mri, etc) or a diagnostic laparoscopy.

I really have no clue what it could be (or I'd try to stop mine), but maybe you have cysts or something? I was given the option to remove my uterus but I am not emotionally prepared for that. So I'm going to try and tough it out the best I can.

Well I go for the ultrasound of the uterus tomorrow.

But its up in the air. It could easily be premenopause. Or fibrobi

or however you spell it.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what to think, but at least she is a good doctor.

Okay at this point there are cyst, and I have to wait 3 months and go back for a return ultrasound.

I also have to go have blood work done.
