RSD & abcessed tooth?

hey all. i don't know if these two things go together, but i wanted to see if any of you have ever had unbearable tooth pain.

for about a month now, i have had major pain in the R side of my face. a tooth chipped off about a year ago, but maybe more of it chipped off - exposing the nerves. i finally got to the point where i couldn't take it anymore. drinking, eating, walking outside in the cold, breathing thru my mouth - it all kills me.

i didn't know if i had an ear infection, or if it was the tooth, so for about a week i was putting pain drops in my ear. when the pain didn't stop, i started using antibiotic drops. that didn't work either so i went to the dentist. he told me that my molar was abcessed and gave me antibiotics for the infection. he told me i had to have a root canal and then a crown. so i told him that i was having horrible deep aching pain plus shooting pains on occasion and he said the nerve ending should be dead, but maybe it wasn't. he gave me vicodin.

well the vicodin doesn't do anything for the pain. i am probably going to the dr. tomorrow to see if i have an ear infection. wouldn't surprise me. i've been sick with something all summer. flu, bronchitis, all of these lovely little colds... my RSD pain in my arm hasn't resurfaced, but my immune system is really bad for some reason.

ok. so i've been researching this pain and i've come up with trigeminal neuralgia. sounds nightmarish like RSD, but i don't think i meet the criteria. so i was wondering if any of you had had mouth/jaw problems and what it was like.

maybe i'm overreacting.
shalom,
a

Hi Unrouley1,

I have always found it amazing how small a problem in the mouth or teeth can cause such a huge amount of pain:(
I have been rocking back and forward with severe tooth.face ache only to find that it was all from a small crack in a tooth on the opposite side:rolleyes:
I feel really sorry for you, I feel that face pain often seems more overwhelming because of it's locality to the thinking part of us----silly I know but it seems too hard to distance yourself from it.
Now to Trigeminal Neuralgia---I have had this on a few occasions. I had a tumour in my salivery gland removed and this seemed to upset the trigeminal nerve somewhat. It is hideous pain, it spreads from the ear to the top of the head and then down to the bottom of the jaw and the ear to the nose. It seems to come in waves like contractions and to be honest it was a pain that took me to the edge.
This was long before RSD so I was not used to pain (labour pain excepted) I was given pethidine which helped but this pain lasted on and off for a few weeks when one day I realised it had gone!!
I hope that you find it is something as treatable as an ear infection--that seems a good option.
Heaps of luck

i want to add that i HAVE had terrible tooth pain before - wisdom teeth extraction, infection, yadda yadda. i know what it is like to have mouth pain, but this is unbelievable.

spreads from the ear to the top of the head and then down to the bottom of the jaw and the ear to the nose

this is what it feels like! that is why i am wondering if i have an ear infection as well. i have also had TMJ flare-ups many times and i know that this pain isn't it. my tongue even hurts.

gonna go to the dr. tomorrow and i HOPE it is an ear infection.

Hey Ang!
Sorry to hear about the awful pain! Ok.. am I getting this right?? You went to the dentist, he tells you that your molar was abcessed and wanted to do a root canal and then a crown? Ok, he gave you antibiotics first(which he did the right thing)Gave you vicodin. I say let the antibiotics work along with the vicodin(You have got to have the much needed antibiotic in your system first) before your dentist can do the root canal!! Yes, it feels like a huge ear ache, especially since the tooth is abcessed. He(your dentist) wants to get the infection wiped away first) so he can do the work needed to be done for the tooth)You let this go far too long.. a month?? that is wayyyy too long to be letting it go. I say, keep on taking the antibiotic's vicodin and go back to your dentist to have that root canal. If it get's any worse, he may have to extract it, Ang!! I hope you get some relief after the antibiotic's kick in! Love, ~Desi

Good luck with your appointment-----gosh it sounds as though it could be any of those horrible things we've mentioned.
Let's hope the relief is soon
Take care
